Ok. So manipulated by frank, he sacrifices himself to save the girl. But she'll die anyhow. She came to the party becuase her pschyo dad killed her mom. So she could just have nowhere to go and die too anyhow killed by her dad instead of by frank. Yet the whole time he's in the past with the memories of what would happen in the future. He could just not get himself into a situation that gets her killed and even do a butterfly-effect type of scenario. BUt he just dies. Granted he's not exactly mentally stable at that point, but the thought should have crossed his mind. The fact that the engien hit him in the first place shows that preserving the timeline isn't an important factor. The only advantage I can think of is him wanting to become a ghost like Frank was.

You and Lyinar can go have an I-hate-donny-darko party somewhere.

Awesome. Seriously, no need to complain at me or anything, I don't HATE the movie. I guess it could be entertaining. I'm just saying I think it's way overrated in the realm of "philosophical movies that... really make you think, huh?"
Certainly, nobody should feel stupid if they "don't get it." Lashanna fucked around with this message on 07-30-2004 at 01:11 AM.

I just took the movie for face value, the way someone might look at a painting.
It presents no redeemable philosophical moral, no, but that doesn't affect how good a story it is.

I can't say I don't agree with you. In that sense that movie IS overrated if you think about it, along with The Fight Club and whatnot. But it's still totally awesome and I just love it all because it's so bittersweet and beautiful. I'm lame like that.

I never said I disliked the movie. Rather I hate the people who think Frank is on level with Siddartha Gautama or something.

eh, no, fight club isn't in the same category. The plot of Fight Club is actually based around accurate Taoism, and it's lessons do translate to real life morals. Maradon! fucked around with this message on 07-30-2004 at 01:17 AM.

I did like Fight Club alot more, and I am fond of it, but it still seems to attract the same High School Philosophers.

So does any legitimate philosophy

But legitimate philosophy is legitimate.
But then again, I've never seen the Jaws series.. or the godfather trilogy.
I'm lame.
American beauty was more touching to me.. And I like Family Guy's take on it.
Peter: "It's so beautiful! A bag caught in the wind, I feel like my heart is going to burst, it's so pretty!"
God: "It's just a fucking bag! DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW COMPLICATED YOUR CIRCULATORY SYSTEM IS?!?!"

actully, I kinda agree. Movies like the latest Planet of the Apes piss me off; the ones that put things in there to "make people think" but have no real reason for the stuff to be there. What's going on at the end of the latest planet of the apes movie? I donno. What annoys me is the fact hte producers don't either.
I see it as an excuse of lack of creativity or lazyness. After watching the movie at a friend's birthday party and again last weekend in the city with the same friend, I'm still not sure if everything was intentional or if it falls into the same cop-out. If there is an explenation for everything and it falls together in one grand master scheme, I will be impressed. If the little unexplained parts are there to "make people think" I will lose a lot of respect for the producer.
Seeing the directors cut, I really hope there is a grand master scheme. Lady Death's book should explain most of it. diadem fucked around with this message on 07-30-2004 at 09:40 AM.
