Secondly, what should I play at all? I'm the kind of guy who loved the way old-school monks were in EQ, and I'd like something similar. Decent melee damage with decent tanking = <3
You'll be happy for it.
It's pretty easy to do a restart on a character later if you don't like it, but just playing the game first for a while is the best part.
The power-sets are all variations on the theme of punching things in the face. Basically:
Dark Melee: damage + acc down
Spines: damage + slow
Katana/Broadsword: damage + def down (broadsword is slower but more damage)
Martial Arts: damage + disorients/knockdowns
Claws: damage+?

You can try being a Martial Artist + Invulnerability Scrapper. Martial Artist moves are all kicks, but you have Brawl by default, and you can get 'Boxing' as an additional power to use your fists. Or get Flurry, it looks kickass, a ton of really fast punches all at once
If you play it right (Take the right pool powers), you'll end up being able to hit the same damage-reduction cap that Tankers hit (90% Damage reduction), and do more damage, though you'll sacrifice HP by going scrapper. Khyron fucked around with this message on 06-24-2004 at 08:03 PM.
Moogle, Martial Arts sounds nice. So does Spines. Which one is better, power-wise?
Khyron: That sounds pretty much like my kind of play, though I might just go all out damage. I'll check the hero planner. Jens fucked around with this message on 06-24-2004 at 08:03 PM.

Spines looks the ghey, but it probably is better. It deals minor Damage over Time, has a decent short-range ranged attack, and has a nice, wide variety of AE attacks. Martial Arts has more power per hit, but zero ranged attacks, all melee, and fewer AE's.

Well, I'm the Spines scrapper duder and I'm very happy with it. If it weren't for my PBAoE attacks, I'd have to break down and cry every time I ran into a monster that had gone and gotten itself stuck in a wall (as opposed to having to do that once).
The DoT is very spiffy, as is Impale (the ranged attack mentioned; it doesn't have much of a range, but it's enough, and it can also Immobilze and it does a good chunk of damage too).
Gadani's an MA scrapper. He enjoys Disorienting guys, which is a pretty handy ability to have.

That's what I get for trying to use Dragon. Haha.
Targetting drone is indeedly awesome; slap two extra enhancement slots in it, put two ToHitbuff enhs and an endurance reducer, and you're almost never going to miss.
Since you have no real defensive/secondary abilities as a blaster, that helps a lot. You know, being pure damage and all that. Also, Caltrops is a boon, even if it has been nerfed a lot recently.
