So a few weeks ago, I got on as an auxillary worker down at the local Rec center/pool/arena. The deal with auxillary is, you don't get any of the benefits of a permanant part-time, or full time worker, but you get an extra 11% on your paychecks. Also, the auxillary's work the midnight shifts, either 10pm-6am, or 12-8am, until there's an opening for another position, and my boss sends me to get my two pool operator tickets, and RO(refridgeration ticket, to use the Zamboni and work on the arena side). Once I have my three tickets, I'm considered a Level 3, which comes with a pay raise, and all the benefits, yadda yadda, including day or afternoon shifts.
By the way, my dad works at the arena/pool, he's a 3. My boss is a really good buddy of his, which is how I initially got the job. Since I started there though, I've heard only praise for the work I've done, and have been told how much of an asset I would be to the place(the other auxillary is a middle aged guy, that's seems like he's been working for way too many years, he just doesn't really do anything). The great thing about this job, is it's a foot in the door to this union, and CRD(the organization that runs all rec centers and such), so once I get my tickets, I could transfer pretty much anywhere in the province, or even the country, but keep my seniority.
The other day, however, my dad was at work, and a Heat and Frost Insulator came in to do an estimate for a job. They got to talking, and this guy is mandated by his company to hire so many apprentices each year.
So I phone this guy yesterday, he spends 20 minutes on the phone and gives me a lot of information about the work, the company, how things work. Apparently there's only like 80 guys in the province that have journeyman status, and that there's going to be work for alot of years in this field.
The apparenticeship is 4 years, with a month of schooling each year, and once reaching journeyman status, the money is very, very good. Like $50+ an hour.
I'd just like some input on what you people think. This seems like a pretty big life decision, so I'm trying to weigh out where I see myself for the next five years.
Thanks in advance.

Second question: Doesn't this all sound a little too good to be true?
2: No, not really. It's a trade that all the journeymen from are retiring, and there's a severe lack of new workers taking it up, which is why the guy I talked to is mandated by his company to hire four or so new apprentices each year.

No, it doesn't seem too good to be true. Alot of jobs like this are loosing their main workforce, since more and more people are getting more office related job. How do you fix this? Offer more money, benefits, promotion opportunities, etc.
It goes for the same with a welding guild. If you are a good welder some place will higher you up front for $20-$30 an hour. Tareshinal fucked around with this message on 06-12-2004 at 01:11 AM.
I think my biggest concern about taking the apprenticeship, is being tied down for 4 years doing the same thing. I'm still pretty young, and would like to do some more travelling, but this is just such an amazing oppurtunity.
Thanks for all the input so far, and what is still to come.
