Well, I get done with the meeting and come home with a big folder or info and call my mom to let her know how it went and to tell her that I got a lot of info and could go over it tonight, but she said that we couldn't tonight cause she had to iron my brothers clothes and gown for his graduation tomorrow (Both me and my brother suck horrbly at ironing.) I thought how long does it take to iron some clothes, Well, the warning bells should have gone off then.
I go to work and just recently got home, and before hoping onto my comp, I talk to my mome about the art institute in more detail. (Thing is, that I have recently applied and am very close to getting a postion with the city of San Diego, which my parents have pushing me to get.) Well, she asks what I want to be getting into and I tell her Game Art and Design. She says "ohh, you can do that on the side, while you work for the city." Now, the warnig bells hadn't gone off before, but they are roaring now. I tell her that doing this wouldn't mean a part time side job, but a full time job, which too she just frowns and shakes her head, saying that we will cross that bridge when we get to it, I try to tell her that this is really what I want to do, but she just interupts me to tell me I know, but This city job will be very good for me, and i cant pass it up. So I should hold off on going until i get this job and find what my schhed will be like, though i already know that my sched will rotate and I'm going to need to put in a request to get those days off. God, my mom is so maniulipitive, I so want to move out, but I can't afford to with my currunt job.

Actually, from what I've heard, they are. I've always heard that it is a lot less likely to get fired from a government job than from a corporate/private one.
Though none of this info is based on first hand experience...

Also, though I'm sure you don't want to consider it, your mom has a point. Have you looked at the job market or average salary for graduates of the program you're considering? Have you looked at the job market or average salary for your dream job as a game art designer? If the markets are tough, have you taken a hard, objective look at yourself to determine if you have a realistic chance at success?
You're at the point in your life where you need to consider broader questions than whether or not you want a particular something. You have to consider how you plan to support yourself, and in what style you'll be happy.
Perhaps it's as simple as your mom not wanting to continue support you for the next 20 years. Perhaps she wants to move on with her life. Those are neither selfish nor manipulative goals.

BTW, I sent you the first of those files you asked for. What say we see if Khyron will let me put the folder on his FTP server?

So, I decided I needed something that was a bit more secure, had tangable opertunities. That's what you're mom's trying to do for you. You may not like it now but you'll be thanking her later. Trust me.

Depends on how good that degree is. Like haveing a degree in basket weaving isn't going help you much.
Now if he was wanting to go and get like a libral arts or something like that, even a 2 year degree, and she objected? Then something is wrong.
I see you moms point. I myself am working full time for the next year or two to save up in order to go away for college for my career choice. But in the mean time Im taking night school courses at a local college in my field, so although Im waiting to go to my main college, Im still learning and reaching my goal. Its just gonna take a while....
You could always look into doing that for a while.... theres always away to do it, if its what you really want to do.
Going to school for a BA in art and going to work for the state are not mutually exclusive.

I still live at home unfortently, so unfortently, they have something to hold over my head. And no, I'm not asking for money. As for the colloge, I've checked it out, and they have a 94% job placement within the 1st 6 months after graduation, and the average starting out pay is $32~34 thousand a year, Which ALOT more then I'm currently making. As for my own talents, at this current moment, no, I don't have the skills to go into what I want to do, and that's why I want to go, cause I am confidinte that they can help me get those skills. And oh yea, it is a BA degree in art.
32 to 34k isn't a whole lot of money dude. Especially in San Diego. Can you feed clothe and house yourself for 2800 a month? What about transportation to and from work and everything else you would need? 2800 a month would be damn comfy if you were living at home, but hard pressed if you're paying 900+ a month for rent, and paying for a car, utilities, food, ect.
I'm 17 and I know that it'd be hard to live on that here in the Pheonix Metro area, unless I didn't mind living in a studio apartment. As is I only make about $400 a month at my part time job. I spend about half that on gas alone just getting where I *need* to go.

Waisz had this to say about Reading Rainbow:

Arguably. As has been pointed out, it depends on the job. A Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy or the like doesn't set you up for much, and a Bachelor's Degree in, say, Psychology is really just a stepping stone you can put on a resume while you work on getting your Master's (making you a psychologist) or your Doctorate (making you a psychiatrist).
So.
The real question I'd ask yourself, DoR, is if there's any damage being done in taking the "safe" job. If your parents pulled strings for you to get that job, there will be significant angst if you refuse to take it. Big if, but a significant one. Likewise, if the job isn't the cause of all evil, it could help you stockpile funds if you eventually end up going to school after all. If your parents are cool with you staying with them for a while while you do this job, it could allow you to build up a nest egg and funds to help you get started on your own life (which if nothing else, puts you in a better position for making your own decisions).
Sounds to me like your parents either 1. Think this is rather sudden (the art school interest) or 2. Have some sort of vested interest above the normal "parents care about me" situation. It could be that they're looking forward to having some time off from taking care of the kids. Could be they pulled strings to get you this job. Could be that you were heading towards this job for a while and now (to them at least) it seems like you've got it into your head to take this job.
On those grounds, I'd wrangle the parental figures into a talk. You don't really want to, sounds like your Mom's avoiding facing it head on, but there has to be a meeting of the minds at some point. And if worse comes to worse, delaying college by a semester or a year or whatever isn't going to really ruin your chances of ruling the world

If I did a silly thing like that I'd get out of Aviation and go to law school or something. Oh, eventually I'll be able to support myself but not until I put a lot of WORK and THIN YEARS into it.
Merely supporting yourself isn't everything.

Perhaps, but there's a lot to be said for not having to wonder where your next meal is coming from, and the independence that comes with a good job.
And I, for one, consider it somewhat less than honorable to mooch off one's parents indefinitely just because one can't be bothered with little things like making a living. There are many valid reasons for sticking with the 'rents, but pursuit of an unrealistic goal doesn't strike me as one of them.

No, that's why they're called parents! If they wanted a life, then they shouldn't have become parents!
Accually they deserve a reward for raising kids. *nods*

I'm not turning this job down if I do get it. I will work there while going to the Art school; I was already planning to do t hat. but the thing is, that when I get done with school, if I can find a job doing Game Art, then I will quit the city job to do game art, If I don't I will stay with the city. And as for the City job, the max pay for the postion is $3,o16 a month, which calculates to about $36,ooo a year, which isn't that much more then the average starting pay.
Average. And you could still be with the 4% who don't get placed, or be downsized, or whatever. It's still a stable job. Don't burn any bridges.

That sounds like the best course of action for you.
and Bloodsage. I do try not to mooch off my parents, I spend about 7 hours a day at home total and 4 to 6 of those involve sleeping, I carry two jobs and go to school full time. I have been through hell... AND a divorce. Which is really bad for your credit and I don't reccomend it.
My parents have given the best possible support. When I announced that I wanted to switch from CS to Aviation they never even flinched. I explained the job market to them and how hard it was going to be and their response has never been anything but "If it's what you really love." My mom, who has never expected me to be anything but a pilot for my entire life, said "What took you so long?" I just laughed. My wife?... well... she didn't want to be a pilot's wife.
So I thought about my previous post and I have an addendum/correction. Yes, you shouldn't be a burden on your parents. But your parents telling you to forgo what you really want for the "safe" option, to me, is criminal. My parents are willing to support me, emotionally always, monetarily if necessary, as long as they see that I'm making progress. To me, that is the ideal situation.

Pretty much sums it up.
*Edit: Actually all that sounded a lot more negative than I intended. Basic point, hold on to your dreams, just dont be dumb about it. Don't just jump at the first chance you get. Do your research first. Taking risks are all well and good, just be smart about it, and don't sacrifice lively hood for desires. Pursue them casually and with care.
