One's 98, one's XP. XP is this computer. It's the "good" one.
What I want to do is transfer files from the 98 computer to this one with as little hassle as possible.
Both are connected to a router via a DCHP system or whatever.. each computer is assigned a specific IP address (I'm 192.168.0.100, upstairs is .101). I have tried from this computer to go to 192.168.0.101 while it's on, but it won't respond. I've tried plugging in 192.168.0.100 into IE on the other machine, but I get a page not found error.
Is there something special I should be doing? Should I put in anything after the IP? Is there some special program I could download that would allow me to transfer files, or will I have to end up installing WSFTP on the other computer, and uploading the files to a 3rd party host?
Just pluggin in IPs to Internet Explorer won't do anything, as IE looks on port 80 unless otherwise specified, and I doubt you're running a webserver on a '98 box. I'd make sure file/printer sharing is on for both computers, and they're in the same workgroup (this isn't strictly necessary, but windows seems to like things more this way). You should be able to see them under Network Neighborhood (or My Network Places on XP) and transfer files that way.
If that fails...chuck GuildFTPd on the good computer (an FTP server), an FTP client of choice on the second computer, and upload away.
If you try sharing a folder on the WinXP system instead, you will need to also create a user with username and password matching whatever user logs into Win98, and give that user permission to write to the shared folder on the XP machine, before sitting down at the Win98 machine to copy files over.
Do you have the Windows XP CD? If you do, take it to the Windows 98 PC and stick it in the CD-ROM and use the utility on the CD (it should be in the menu) to set up Home Networking on the Win98 PC.
If you don't have the XP CD, then double-click on My Network Places on your XP PC and look for the Home Networking icon and create a home network. When you are prompted to create a floppy for the other computers on the network please follow the instructions to create the floppy and then take it to the 98 machine and install the program from the floppy onto the 98 PC.
Good luck!
If not, I'm boned; the floppy drive doesn't work on this machine for reasons I can't fathom.
Edit: Woot, found my XP CD. Thanks for the help. Delphi Aegis fucked around with this message on 06-02-2004 at 06:19 PM.
