The article says that the events at Abu Ghraib prison being public convinced the abused reporters to come forward as well.
Sexual abuse is kept quiet as often as it's reported. Women often don't report rape for fear of retribution from their attackers if there's no conviction. Can you blame them for not wanting to be the only three people in the world to come forward and tell tales of sexual abuse at the hands of the military, knowing that people like you would have questioned their motives, and probably painted them somehow as traitors and liars?
