...must everything break on a car all at the same fuckin time?

It just started pouring out smoke on the M1, and the RACV gave me a list that would have been shorter if it was what was -not- wrong with my car, and a $1200 ultimatum.

Did you take it to a dealership?!? They'll rape you every time.

Been going through the same on my car, but given it's 10 years old, I expect no less.

yeah.. dealerships are expensive, but they generally get everything.. it's more your personality and what you can afford. good mechanics are hard to find.... it's cheapest to order a part and have a mechanic install it, if you can find a place t hat'll let you do that

I know what you mean.

My car just had it's waterpump blow, $500 to fix.

But, along the way, they found another $2500 of fixes they say need to happen soon. ( $1000 per pair of brakes alone. It is a BMW, and I know they can be expensive, but going to go to a Midas or the like to get a new estimate on these, as $1000 for a pair of brakes seems a tad excessive .)

That sucks. But thats the way it always go, you never notice the small things, so when something big explodes you have to drain your bank account.

What breaks? new calipers? new rotors? new pads? new lines? new retaning springs? new master cylinder?

The reason why when one major thing goes, they all go is that it's one big system. Asking why if part X is dead and exploded, did part Y go with it is a bit like asking "Hey I only lost my liver, how come my whole body is dying? These lungs are still good!"

I've asked the dealership to provide a list of exactly what they thought was wrong, detailing parts and labor. I've yet to receive it, thus increasing my desire for another estimate.

The RACV actually, they're slightly less dishonest. I think.

Some of the more major things are the radiator and the head gasket in need of replacement, and there was a whole list of other things but those have stuck in the mind.
