So yesterday an old friend of my Father calls and wants to talk to me. I was heading out the door so I told him I would call him back tonight.

Turns out that he and a couple others are starting a company to provide wireless internet to business such as Coffee shops, hotels, etc.

How does this involve me? Well it turns out they want a partner to handle the Southern Indiana Market.
I am a bit leery since it is a fledgling company. However they have a good, solid business plan and the market is pretty good around here.

I will handle sales and installation to begin with but as the market get large I will be able to hire in people to handle some of the work. I get base pay plus 100 Bucks per sign up and 15-20 percent of the monthly income from each place depending on their usage.

The best part is that It will be pretty easy to work around my school schedule.

Grats. Starting and running a business is hard, demanding, and risky, but its worth it. You get to be your own boss, you get a sense of control, and even without the money its a lot more satisfying than another job.

Edit: Forgot to mention - in any sort of partnership deal, DO A CONTRACT. Even if you're on good terms with the guys, it provides more structure for the business, make you more appealing to prospective creditors such as banks if you need loans, and can specify in advance the terms of dissolution of the business, division of profits, et al. Its just good to have a legal contract if it goes south, and well worth the $500-$1000 it may cost to have a lawyer who specializes in business law draw up for you guys.

I'd say weigh the pros and cons. If you have more to gain than to lose, then go for it.

I've witnessed various family/friends businesses. When they work well almost nothing is better. If they don't though (or once something starts falling apart) they can be absolute hell. Make sure everything is on a solid footing and consider what will happen if you hit a rocky patch.

All in all though sounds like a great opportunity and the best of luck with it.

sounds to me you do all the work and they get most the money. well I suppose its best to be a well paid peon than not at all.

ponders how they hope to compete with the local cable and phone compaines

Why would they have to compete with Phone or Cable companies. They are providing the wireless networking solution. The companies provide their own HSA.

not sure, it seems to me if i were the local cable or phone company id be offering the local places to install a kiosk allowing them to get a percentage of the profits, much like the soda companies did with the schools and colleges

good luck though lots of money to be made if you can get a good customer base
