floods, tornadoes, earthquakes...
what's yours?
mine was tornadoes, for those in southern ontario, if they remember in 1995 or 1996 there were multiple tornadoes on the escarpment near downtown hamilton, and I was standing on the balcony of my apartment on the phone with my gramma, and watching it twist... the sky was fucking green! It was kinda cool.
Of course, and there my history with fires, but they're not classified as natural disasters.
Probably the Ice Storm of '98. That was fricken cool. >D In the guiness book and everything
90+ mph winds with rain and hail..
Flash floods..
It isn't fun.

Seriously though, I guess the absolute worst natural disaster I've been through was a severe thunderstorm..
Although I did get close (approx. 10 miles from) a bushfire (wildfire to you guys) way way back... watched it from my grandparents farm as we were helping them evactuateit.. the fire come racing over a mountainside (and I mean racing... I'd literally never seen anything moving so fast), only for it to be stopped at a pine plantation when the wind shifted and started blowing the fire back on itself.. The noise was pretty intense, but there was nothing else of note, given it was that far away..

Was it an effect similar to when Parce had those spicy buffalo wings?

Missed an F5 tornado by about an hour... and was in a 5.1ish earthquake, but that wasn't so bad.
Not sure which was the worst one. Fran (caused a tree to fall on our house and nearly go THROUGH the house), or the one that flooded nearly everywhere in eastern NC (15ish miles anywhere from our house was flooded.)
Prolly the flood one.

I was just in Buffalo. Well, Williamsville/Amherst.

The flood was definitely the worst. And definitely the worst natural disaster I've been through. Talk about hell. Took 2 weeks to get basic things like electricity where we were close to the power company. What a mess.

Didja stop and have REAL Buffalo wings while you were here? I think they have them even in Amherst.

Nah, I was just at my BF's for the night. We ordered in pizza from a place called Santaro's
In the wake of that twister, the weather was in such a state that tornadoes continued to form off and on for a week. They would pop literally out of nowhere, with minimal warning. It was horribly nervewracking.
The last one to roll through was the most disturbing. A buddy and I were leaving the movies, and everything was deathly silent. There was lightning everywhere, but not a whisper of thunder, wind, rain, or even chirping crickets.
Suffice it to say I got my fat ass back to the house ASAP.
Minor twister in Chicago that uprooted a tree in our backyard, but didn't do much else.
In Pittsburgh, there was a tornado that tore the heck out of Mt. Washington, and right after we left, there was a series of microbursts that decimated our neighborhood, Fox Chapel.
In Seattle, this is the kicker. Pretty decent earthquake, I think it was a 6.7, felt it out in our highschool, where the walls were shaking, the lamp-poles were swaying, and me and my classmates just had to be walking on the 2nd floor balcony/walkway, under the long skylights on the roof.
We wanted to get back into the classrooms because we had been on break when it started, but we were afraid that either the skylights would shatter and send sheets of glass down on us, or that the bridges to the classroom would collapse right when we walked on them.
Turned out to be not that major, just a bunch of shaking/swaying, and it was over, but we were *ahem* rattled by it. We watched the news about it for the rest of the day, including seeing footage of Bill Gates nearly getting beaned by a studio light. The Old Fire from last October, may not be natural, but damn it was a disaster. The fire line was stopped only a mile away from my house, eek. But I did get to shake hands with the "Govanator" when I went to get my mail at the evac center. :P
Quakes? Pfft. Those are nothing.

Last time I Visted my reltives in Montana, drove through a portion of a mountian side were they had a really bad fire the year prior. Might have well been the fucking moon, fire burned so hot it sterilzed the soil.
Also if you meet the Govantor again, tell him to get off his ass and make another Conan movie, one that doesn't suck. Peter fucked around with this message on 05-04-2004 at 01:06 AM.

Wow, I never knew fire could kill off the soil. o_O
Caltrans shot some grass seeds into some of the burned area along the highway, to help prevent mudslides, it's comming in pretty good. But this area will never be the same again in any of lifetimes, thats for sure.
The worst that most directly effected me was the Flood in '94. ( Only one disaster I've been through that actually causes damage to property I owned. ) Pesco fucked around with this message on 05-04-2004 at 01:17 AM.
Was on a business trip to Tulsa. Was in a hotel downtown, when they started having people evacuate their rooms to go down into the parking deck below the hotel. The staff decided not to bother notifying the upper levels of the hotel since they wanted to get to saftey themselves. Got notified by a coworker on a lower floor. Tornados that day swept through a number of areas just outside downtown.
Also, had a tornado touch down just a half mile away from my parents house in Medina, Ohio.
I can't honestly say that I was scared. Worried about family members for a few hours though.
Earthquakes. Lots of earthquakes, actually, as pretty much anyone in the SF bay area will tell you. You grow accustomed to them.
