So me and a bunch of friends went to see Kill Bill Volume 2, I feel that i deserve a couple more hours added onto my life for having to endure that. Hell the Movie theater should pay me for sitting through that crap.
The only good part of the movie were the Previews for Van Halsing and Hero.
The only movie that I can ever thnk of that I saw in a theater that was worse than this was "In the Bedroom".

If not for the fact that I was with friends and they drove, I woudl have left about 20 minutes into the film.

I think I thought it looked stupid.

I don't know how to be sexy. If I catch a girl looking at me and our eyes lock, I panic and open mine wider. Then I lick my lips and rub my genitals. And mouth the words "You're dead."

If that's how you call a visual masterpiece, sure.

Hero is great, and I daresay much better than Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Has the same flowing, graceful battles but is a lot prettier overall. It is, in my opinion, one of the best movies ever. ^_^

I've noticed that the people who hated the first one didn't understand it or what it was made for or about. *shrug*

Oh and by the way, Jet Li doesn't take on an army, he gets his shit ruined at the end of the movie by about 10,000 arrows. Oops!

Even after knowing what it was made for, I still couldn't stand it. But I didn't see KB 2, fool me twice, shame on me and whatnot

Some of us simply dont like bad acting, cheesey dialogue and the complete overuse of violence with 10,000 gallons of fake blood coming out of people, regardless of the intentions of the movie.

The advertising trailers for the first movie was quite deceiving.

Synny and I enjoyed it

Rented vol 1 last night.. so it was all still pretty fresh in mind. The over-use of blood in the first one, I believe, was a jab at anime. The fact that all human beings in any anime contain about 5-10 gallons of blood under extreme higher pressure, and even lopping off a finger results in a geyser of blood

450 gallons of fake blood for the two movies, actually.

And the shocking thing isn't that ECers are surprised when a handful of people didn't like the movie everyone else liked. The shocking thing is that ECers go to movies like they're movie critics, expecting against all odds that every single movie is supposed to, in some fashion, lead them to an epiphany of enlightenment and spiritual creaminess.

The first thing any film appreciation class teaches you is to identify the professed target audience, identify the work's purpose, and base your critique on those elements, rather than personal bias. You can add your personal bias afterwards, but it is not part of what a mechanics-critique is.

For instance, that "Bowling for Columbine" film may very well encapsulate the point of view and amuse the members of it's target audience; it may do the job that it was meant to do. That is, unfortunately, why it won an award. However, personal bias is why I said "unfortunately" and shouldn't be taken into account.

Now...if Kill Bill was targeted at fans of old kung-fu, spaghetti western, etc movies as an homage, and if the purpose was to pay respects to those films and to function as a good quirky (in the Tarantino-esque definition of the word "quirky") action movie, then I would say that the first volume of Kill Bill was a fantastic success. It was not, however, a movie meant to change your life. It was not a movie meant to entertain hordes of fans who think films like the Matrix (which had a different target audience and different purpose) are cutting edge chic.

That's what, classically, doomed movies based on comic books, for instance, and is in essence what killed the last two Batman movies (Joel Schumacher pulled the trigger, but this was his motive). It's also why Spider-Man and the X-Men movies have been such wild successes. In the past movie makers weren't writing for the people who would make or break the movies. They had failed to identify the core audience (in the name of, in theory, appealing to the masses), and didn't have a purpose in most cases (aside from getting a marketable image on the screen). Newer superhero movies are targetted towards the core audience (fans of the comics) more, making allowances for certain elements that need editting for time constraints or more non-fanboy viewers. The purpose is to tell the comic book stories as they should be told, faithful to the comics as much as possible, without just tossing names out on a screen (which is what happened with "Batman and Robin").

That's also why, critically speaking, movies like Donnie Darko aren't ever going to make it to the big screen. It's not that they're edgy indie films that most people aren't cool enough to get. The story, in long retrospect, is broadly understandable. The problem was that there was no core purpose, or if there was, the execution was so muddled that it obscured the purpose or message. Likewise, the core audience was muddled. Was this supposed to be targetted at teenagers? 20something college students? Sci-Fi junkies?

Now, in the fullness of time, a film like Donnie Darko may end up being a "cult classic" (which more or less just means that there's a ravenous horde of fans who sees something there that the rest of us don't), but it won't be a cult classic like the "Evil Dead" series is.

Yeah I avoided seeing it for a long time because no one could clue me in as to what the deal with it was. Then Lyinar got me to watch it so I'd at least be able to articulate what bugged me about not having people able to clue me in on what's going on. Then I watched it and it was horrible. It made me twitchy-annoyed from a critical standpoint, and it bored the hell out of me from a personal standpoint.

I mentioned it (Donnie Darko) only because inevitably people resort to the "you just didn't get it" argument without backing up their point. That's as bad as saying "I didn't like it" without backing up why.

You just explained why I hated it, too. I avoided it for a long time, because it was "mind blowing", but no one could tell me why.

Then I watched it. And it was horrible. The only entertaining parts were at the beginning with his family and sister, the rest was godawfully boring. I think seeing Noah Wyle was the only thing that attempted to redeem it, because I happen to like that man.

Vol 1 and 2's bad acting was just really good acting, IMO. They were meant to act badly because it's all a big spoof. The more cliche and the worse the acting, the better it got for me, because that's what I expected out of them.

The whole kungfu training part of Vol 2 was the best thing out of both movies, simply BECAUSE of the bad acting and cheesiness of it all. The fumanchu stroke was so perfect. I loved it.
