argh. With that I could sneak into Stanford, maybe.
At least I got a couple years before worrying about getting admitted to anywhere.

Why would you pay more money to learn the same stuff? Prestige?
Linguistics, being a small and new (to the limelight, at least) field, makes it logical to go to a school known for having a good Linguistics department. It just happens to be that Stanford is one such school, so I'm burdened with worrying about trying to a) get in and b) pay for it.
And yeah, I guess wanting to be able to say I went to a prestige school is sorta a factor - but not so much as it used to be.
i got an 1180.
My parents were happy, so thats all that mattered. I went to USF so it was a moot point anyway.
So what do linguistics majors do in the real world? Translate and interpret?

When I took the SATs several years ago, my parents told me that if I got anything below a 1400 on my first try, I'd have to take a $700 Kaplan course over the summer, then try again. As if the summer readings, college investigations, etc., didn't eat enough of my time. Lucky for me, I got exactly 1400, and refused to take the test ever again.
I scored 1480 or 1490 and Stanford smacked me down. My class rank is 6 out of 620. I was fairly involved in activities, but I believe that was my weakness -- not active enough. So, make sure you stick to being very active and working in the community. The test score, well, you can only do so much about that.
And if you need help improving the math...
Though, I will say, I was trying for Stanford's engineering department, which gets many applicants from white, middle class men such as myself. Waisz fucked around with this message on 04-09-2004 at 12:25 PM.
