Why the hell aren't the Final Fantasy heroes ever masculine? The only true hero I ever remember was Butz. He hardly even talked, much less whined, and his arms were the size of his torso.

Well, not like "I'll save the world from my deathbed" type unlikely. More like a "I'm a loser with no friends and no real direction in life... when suddenly I meet someone or something and suddenly I'm on a crash course with saving the world!" type of thing

That leads us dangerously close to the angst road. Back in my day heros were born after they watched their family get mauled by bears, or they just took on the role because they found some cray old man in a cave. I guess that stuff just doesn't fly with the youth today, makes em all lazy. Sitting around all day hating the world waiting for epic (mis)adventures to smack em in the face, In my day you had to chase it down and kill it in 15 feet of snow, uphill both ways, without a back story.

1) You're retarded

2) You can't relate with that type of hero. Additionally, how do you make that into a RPG?

Plus, Tidus wasn't the hero of FFX, Auron was. Think about it: They were both in the opening FMV, they were both plot-critical, and they both got ultra badass attacks. However, Auron got the trademark hero's "giant sword", and Auron wasn't a bitch.

Auron knew what the hell was going on the whole time. Tidus had to figure it out and then use what he knew to make a change in the story.

FFT? Sure he was kinda young at the start, but I think Ramza (wasn't that his name?) fits the bill.

FF1 kinda counts too, if you have the right party. (3 black belts and 1 red mage to win!)

However, Square uses most of their good masculine hero ideas in non-FF games. Crono and Serge, for example.

I believe in the existance of magic, not because I have seen proof of its existance, but because I refuse to live in a world where it does not exist.

You do realize the same comparison was made between Meg Ryan and Tidus, right?

Most pretty people look similar from multiple angles, with the right lighting and similar hair.

Meg Ryan with Dark hair looks nothing like Vann with dark hair.

Edit: Response to masculine FF heroes.

My sig pic is from FF3. Check out that hot eyeliner and black lipstick.
Yoshitaka Amano does the concept art for most Final Fantasies.

His main characters just about NEVER LOOK MASCULINE. EVER.
I mean NEVER EVER!

With good reason. Because masculine heroes are generally stupid.

But to address the topic... Amano influences the characters' appearances in most cases... having shaped the Final Fantasy series. If you like masculine heroes, FF isn't the game for you, unless you can settle for Sabin, Yang, or Gus.

Mind you, most of the heroes have masculine attitudes and roles. Cecil's main ability becomes 'cover.' Butz is a lone traveler, self sufficient, saving princesses from meteor crashes. Locke (disputibly the 'hero.')has to protect everyone he sees. Cloud thinks he's the shit. Squall doesn't give a damn about anyone and feels he can just as well take care of himself. Zidane likes to feel up anything with breasts.

Tidus doesn't count. Firion's just weird.

ahem.

FF1 no written character, no hero.

FF2 kinda split 3 way between Firion, Maria, and Gus, Square hadn't gotten down to main characters yet.

FF3 still haven't played it, pisses me off

FF4 okokok, how the fuck is Cecil not masculine, he feels up the hot blond TWICE, walks around in plate mail, and swings a fucking sword (crystal sword = the pwnage +5), the only person even remotely more badass is Kain.

FF5 no hero, some say Butz, but when you have 3 of the chars for 100%(give or take 3%) of the game, nobody is the main character.

FF6 how is Locked the arguable hero? I think the game has 2 main heroins, Terra and Celes, you start with them both, and both have the most in depth story revolving around them, Terra in the unbroken world with her possession of magic and esper blood. Celes in the 2nd, in which she seeks to find a reason to live (love). Every other character is largely support, but the lines blur, one of the reasons this game is so beloved is the importance of everyone (except gau that little goatfucker).

---======== Square goes to playstation ========---

FF7 c'mon, Cloud, I mean really.

FF8 Squall, no debate to this either.

FF9 Zidane, heh, again undisputable.

FF10 Tidus, he is the fucking main char.

FF11 Not a fucking final fantasy, I don't care what the hell you say.

FFT Ramza, who by the way, is in no way feminine, you may think this by only playing the first part of the game, but later on when he "grows up" and dons his plate, and gets ridiculous skills for his custom squire class, you realize he's a fucking meaty lad, and hard as a coffin nail.

as for the determinate of who the "main hero" is in a Final Fantasy, the solution is simple, who do you spend the greatest amount of time with. by maradon's post, Auron has a lot of the classic telltales of a hero, and its almost disputable, however, no interaction with tidus is ever "unseen", but I believe with every other character, an interaction is only revealed after through retelling.

and that is that.

PS: notice how when square went to psx, not only did the action go 3d (expected and enjoyed), but all of a sudden the stories started revolving around 1 person, instead of multiple people, its my hope that ff12 brings back this group sense of things, instead of making only 1 person important, it will add a little bit of that old school touch that square lost.

FF1 it was all about the Thief/Ninja and the BMge/BWiz with a WMge/WWiz for healing. Ninja > BB/Master

for FF4 Kain > Cecil, but Cecil was the main character and was fairly manly (as long as you forgave the bad coloring of his sprite on occasion).

FF6, didn't give much of a shit. Not all that impressed.

FF7... Cloud was a wanker, but he was the main character and was mostly manly... but he tended to act like a bitch twords the end.

FF8.. Gunboy.... bah, he was a loser, but he was still definately a guy.

FF9, he's got a freaking tail! We've gone from questioning 'is this a man' to wondering if they're going with Furries!

FFX: Tidus, schmidus. Auron was the badass and Tidus was his bitch. How in the hell I wound up with Lulu as his ball thrower at the end I'll never understand.
