I like McCain as far as republicans go, but I think having parties mix like that in a two party system could end in a drift towards a de facto one-party state.

Life... is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that nobody ever asks for. Unreturnable, because all you get back is another box of chocolates. You're stuck with this undefinable whipped-mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down when there's nothing else left to eat. Sure, once in a while, there's a peanut butter cup, or an English toffee. But they're gone too fast, the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits, filled with hardened jelly and teeth-crunching nuts, and if you're desperate enough to eat those, all you've got left is a... is an empty box... filled with useless, brown paper wrappers.

I figure he would pick up a lot of independent votes, but he'd piss off his base. (edit: him meaning Kerry. THough this would piss off the Republican base too, probably)

Hell, though. Maybe it'd help patch up the huge divide that exists in the country today.

His anti-abortion stance is what would lose the democrats vote en masse.

I'm curious why you think McCain is a whore. I'm pretty damn liberal if I do say so myself, however, I've always respected (and seriously considered voting for) only two Republicans, McCain and Powell.

McCain spent years in a Vietnamese POW camp for his country. He at least attempted to clean up politics with the McCain-Feingold bill. I'm curious as to why you dislike him.

Worse than that, he's a flaming hypocrite.

McCain's been known to hit the tables here in Vegas and gamble. Certainly nothing wrong with that, it's how we earn our living here, after all. He doesn't bet Bill Bennett type numbers, but then, who does.

The part that gets a lot of people's Jockey's in a twist (me included) is that, for the past several years, he has aggresively pushed in the Senate to pass a bill outlawing betting on sporting events.

There's only one place in the country that you can legally do that. Here. In Nevada. You want to blow your Social Security check on the blackjack table? No problem. Want to lose the kid's college fund playing video poker? Go crazy. But God forbid you put down $20 when your college alma mater is playing their big rival. Never mind that illegal sports wagering exists in every state and that the amount wagered illegally is many times the amount wagered legally in sports books. Never mind that in the past legal sports books have tipped off authorities to attempts to shave points or fix games because the books noticed strange betting patterns or changes in the point spread. And of course, if you outlaw legal sports betting in Nevada, that means all sports betting everywhere will stop and sports will suddenly become pure and innocent.

Ha! What a bunch of horseshit.

Then I learned more about him, and I have come to the conclusion that he is a total meatbag.

Do a little reading on the internet about how he gave up information while he was a POW in exchange for better accomodations.

Or, how he lied to the Gay and Lesbian community.

He is a meatbag.

Why do we want former Senators to be President anyway? They spend their lives voting according pandering to the people they represent. Then they go be a president who is expected to have leadership skills to do what needs to be done regardless of who is offended. Doesn't sound like an easy transition. Have there been any Presidents who were former Congressmen?

What idealistic rubbish. Here's a few thoughts to ponder on:

Politicians are dishonest. They flip-flop, they spend money, they lie. People think that the candidates should be more than human. Above that sort of thing. People are wrong. You cannot fight your base instincts. It's ridiculous to expect that degree from anyone.

Furthermore, yes, they pander to their voters. That's how they get votes. This is simplistic logic that seems to escape you. People like to be flattered. People put people into power who pander to them.

You can in fact fight your basic instincts, that's why you're currently in front of a computer and not out in the jungle, eating ants. Politicians are dishonest because the public does not care about honesty and cares more about appeals to emotion and thus elects dishonest people.
