I can handle the driving well enough...but the AI in 150cc are fucking bastards. Especially the guy who's always in first, whoever it may be.

So how do I beat them? Any tips? I'm not that great at driving games in general.

I heartilly recommend using Baby Bowser and one of the Koopa Troopas as your racers. Since they race a light kart, you can easily recover from mistakes or when the AI reams you. The giant shell and triple shells (especially red) occur quite frequently, and ruin whoever is in front of you or if you're in first, the giant shell will get rid of anyone behind you.

Use the blue sparks.

Get used to sliding around every corner, even if it's too short to call upon the almighty Blue Sparks.

Generally you just need to learn to eyeball turns to see which can be Sparked and which can't. Using a partner is bad.

A Kansas City Shuffle is when everybody looks right, you go left.

It's not something people hear about.

Blue sparks?

How do I do this? Both shoulder buttons?

Slide as you would normally across a corner, but rapidly move the control stick left and right enough, and you'll eventually get blue sparks.

When you release the shoulder button, you'll get a mini boost.

Horseshit. Having full control of the slide while your partner gets to blue in about a quarter of a second is a vital edge, especially in the 150cc and mirror modes. As a team you can crank out two or three boosts in turns where a single player would get out one.

OK, 150cc is fun, but hard as hell. These guys don't screw around; they use mini-turbos all the time and the designated "1st placer" has a top speed about 5 mph above yours, so the only way to beat them is to consistently pound the living shit out of them with stuff. A valid tactic is to get a blue shell, get into second, wait until the last lap, and let him have it. If you're lucky, you'll send him down into 6th or so, and you'll be able to, with relative ease, win the cup.

For characters, I used Diddy and Bowser Jr. in the Bullet Racer. It's fast and quick, but it requires a deft hand to control it. Diddy's bananas are great for keeping people off your ass, plus they can block red shells. Bowser's giant shell is a fearsome weapon, not only because it can hit multiple carts, but it knocks their items out of their hands. And, if you line it up right, it's almost impossible to avoid.

Unfortunately, luck plays a much larger role in 150cc. Your 30 second lead can and usualy does get cut down by a barrage of blue shells, all of which mysteriously stop after you've been passed. Failing that, you will be hammered mercilessly by red shells while in first, so top notch racing is essential.

The best course for practicing your sliding is Yoshi's Island, IMNSHO. On this twisty fucker you always need to be sliding for decent times.

Yoshi's island...what cup is that again?

nm, found it.

It's hard to get it up to blue fast. Sometimes I get it blue in like a split second though so I don't know what I'm going right, or wrong.

Push the thumbpad away from the slide, then back to neutal to increase your spark 1 level.
