Honestly.
WTF is up with this?
I never ONCE saw ANYONE make fun of the kids in my gradeschool class that didnt make honor roll, the 4 of them were treated the same as anyone else. We didnt care.
Why does everyone have to bitch so much in this country?

But if rewarding great performance is hurting someone's feelings then all performance must be treated with either equal indifference or equal praise. How else will our children learn they only need to do the absolute minimum in everything to be successful in life?
Anyone who does more is just a showboating little attention whore.
Hey, that rhymes!
Under capitalism, man exploits man. Under communism, it's just the opposite. - John Kenneth Galbraith
Abolishing an honor roll is pointless, as if kids are stupid, they're going to either get made fun of anyways, or just ignore it, as in some schools, just about everyone is on it, or the few who are are total brainiacs, so most of the school is not on it.
And if they're going to allow kids to have their names posted on the honor role with a signed permission form, that defeats the whole purpose of the ban, as every single parent will immediately sign the form.
The only downside will be one more annoying form for parents to sign (along with the usual "No, I won't sue you if my kid stabs himself with a pencil"-type forms.)

But what the heck is with that? Schools should make a big deal for everyone who does something good school related. Sports, academics, etc etc should all be displayed with pride. Myself, I prefer a little fascism to all this soccer mom bs. WTF are you if you're not trying to do well at something?
As my calculus teacher would say "Celebrate the discomfort of growth." Not being on some gimpy list isn't really something to cry about, but if it does hurt you, then just use it as an excuse to try harder. You know, not having any challenges is one of the reason why utopias are called... utopias.
If anything, underachievers need to be humilated more. There should be a school day where kids get to throw eggs at the lowest non-special-ed, non-learning-disability GPA's in the school. [ 02-05-2004: Message edited by: Maradon! ]
Personally I think schools need certain protected rights in and of themselves, for the good of the country. But you won't see that until some calamity happens and the majority of people recognize education as being a necessity.
I mean hell, there's still rules in the books in North Carolina that a kid can legally drop out before the age of 16 if they're needed to work on their family's farm.
