I'm just curious, though: how is it you so thoroughly failed to figure out what was going on, even after Kat (bless her smurfy heart) went to all the trouble to make it explicit?
Go sit over in the corner with Blindy and Delphi. You guys can have a group grope, or something. Hell, Delphi's been normal almost long enough to get off the list of grandstanding whiners.
I mean, honestly, how stupid do you have to be to ignore what's actually said--what I explicitly said I was doing--in favor of your own melodramatic creation that has nothing to do with reality?
Let's look at what happened, shall we?
quote:
1. No0b posts. . .might have been interesting, even correct, except contained random Bush-bashing and overflowed with trite emotional pleas.2. Bloodsage posts a tip for the no0b: random Bush-bashing isn't the way to get along in a community you just joined.
3. Moogle tries to tell me that, not only was there no random Bush-bashing, but the no0b had argued solely from facts and logic.
4. Bloodsage examines no0b's post for facts and logic. Finds neither, but does find the aforementioned bashing.
5. No0b retorts that his daddy was really smart, so no one should question his argument.
6.
7. Drysart posts an example of how to argue the same point the no0b did.
8. Diadem, in a fit of drama, locks the thread, but not before a whining rant about the evil, evil Bloodsage, who annoys everyone by insisting that arguments actually have merit before accepting them.
I know this is a sensitive time for you, and everything, Diadem, but are you becoming a vampire? Has the awakening begun?
The interesting thing about this? Not a single person pointed out the merest flaw in my analysis of Orpheus' argument.
{Gik, if you were hoping for a mention or an answer, you'll have to accept only the first. As always, you're just a sideshow.}

Doesn't have to be that way. Black was very nice once he cooled off, and was off the list almost immediately.
That thread could've gone many different ways, and I was but one player in the cast.
--Satan, quoted by John Milton
From what I absorbed from that thread, Orpheus did raise some decent ideas, but didn't discuss them logically, or at least, didn't back up his points solidly. It would have been great if you could've picked apart his argument by providing specific evidence on how the act actually helps or was meant to help schools, where the money absorbed from the act goes, etc. What you did was slice him up for being liberal, and attack his logic. And Gikk, Moogle, and others were right that you never presented much beyond a basic opinion on the issue, not your own personal views.
While each of you have reasons to stand by your points, Orpheus by virtue that he himself is a teacher, therefore wanting to present the view that best benefits himself; and you as a military guy wanted to present the best pro-gov view, the thread wasn't meant to dissolve into a logic seminar.
Diadem took the easy way out by locking the thread, sure, but he did so to help alleviate the hostile feelings that were steadily building up there. To make a thread like this is a kick in the nuts to that noble if somewhat cowardly action.
Long story short...put a damn sock in it.
blindy, even you should see that trying to make a point in an argument by saying "My dad is really smart/an expert on the subject of <whatever>, so therefore anything I have to say about it is above reproach." is not the way to go.

Callalron isn't in Kansas anymore:

Was that a pun?
In that particular thread, bloodsage was being a bitch about attacking someone's argument under the guise of only trying to correct his arguing skills and side steping any counterattack by claiming to be a disinterested party. His refusal to actually, you know, contribute something positive to the theme of the thread and discussion at hand lead to a quick deterioration of any hope of progress in the argument.
I'm just tired of him being all high and mighty about people locking threads when he's not done arguing in them. He grandstands and makes the issue 30 times worse by starting another thread after the first one has ended. [ 01-29-2004: Message edited by: Neo-Blindy ]

How is it noble to post a retort and lock the thread?
Would altruistic be a better word? The cowardly part was referring to the retort. If he had locked it and just said "Stop flaming each other, sheesh!" then it would be more noble I guess. But he was right to halt the shitfest there rather than let the bonfire flame higher.
I don't think that just locking the thread is what set him off. At least by itself. I think maybe it was getting in one last shot and THEN locking the thread. If Diadem had just said, "This is getting too heated. Gonna lock it to let cooler heads prevail.", that probably would have been the end of it. But a lot of folks feel that they just HAVE to get one last zinger in before they end the discussion. [ 01-29-2004: Message edited by: Callalron ]
Diadem makes thread, threatens to lock it if people post something he doesn't agree with somehow.
Orpheus makes a post, shows promise, post is not really all that logical.
Orpheus gets praise.
Bloodsage offers advice to the noob in like, 3 lines of text (short for bloodsage, I took it as advice)
-Insert the divisions of bandwagoners who leap to defend Orpheus or add support to Bloodsage-
The entire point of bloodsage's comment of friendly advice on how to argue issues here is ignored ourtight, and bloodsage is accused of some level of trolling (without using the word)
Bloodsage disputes this, then takes Orpheus entire statement, dissects it, and proves himself right.
People continue to ignore what bloodsage is saying and attack him for picking on noobs, and then back up Orpheus' statement in a logical sense which is what bloodsage wanted from the start.
Bloodsage again points out that he was responding to the initial attack that instead of offering advice on how to argue, he was being uniquely rude to Orpheus.
Orpheus says he's right because his daddy is smart. (I guess that makes me a qualified millwright since my dad worked there for 20+ years)
Diadem locks the thread, a good move, but makes a shitty move of trying to get the last word in, which is quite contemptable.

Really? Because he posted a thread just like this when I simply said "We're never going to come to an agreement on this, so I'm just going to lock the thread," and I'm fucking tired of being grouped with this shit.
I've been nothing but amiable with Bloodsage lately. Jackhole didn't even respond to the post I made about his dog's balls. If you've got a problem with me, let's freaking talk about it. Don't attack me for something someone else did. Jesus christ.

What thread were you reading?
All I did was tell the no0b that random Bush-bashing wasn't the best way to make friends and influence people. I don't care one way or the other about the damned NCLB. Just because I told him his argument lacked all semblance of reason doesn't mean I'm arguing the other side.
That's why the thread went in the toilet: morons like you, who refuse simply to read the words on the screen, decided to assume you knew better than I did what I was thinking. Jeebus--Kat even made it completely obvious!

Altruistic?
You need a new dictionary.
The word you want is "self-serving," which is the opposite of altruistic. Getting in a last flame and locking the thread serves nothing but the internal drama of the coward doing the locking.

That was actually a pretty funny thread, and I was going to (maybe) dig out the pink dog sigpic 'Fae did as a result. But I have little time, and that one conversation took all of it, as people just couldn't get the clue.
I'm in the middle of leading my squadron through several major exercises, and I'm working way too many hours. I'm acting commander this week while my boss takes care of his wife after her surgery.
Sorry if you just don't quite make the cut amongst the other priorities in my life.
Delphi's proven himself, or very nearly so--in time even you may not be associated with overangstiness.
Point taken, though--I'll use more recent bad examples when I compare whiners to each other.

As for Diadem, with what you posted then locked, you had to KNOW what was about to come, and therefore, you deserve this thread.
These opinions have been brought to you by the power of cheese; Cut some tonight, and have it for dinner!

If I can't get the Bloodsage out of the thread, I'll just take the thread away from the Bloodsage.
Everyone else, thank you very much for your opinions. As I didn't expect everyone to like the site design, I'll work on tweaking it as you have suggested. And trust me, the content will improve shortly, You are currently looking at three test posts and a half assed article I did from today at work to make sure the new format for the subtitles worked.

If he had posted "hay guys whats going on in this NCLB", then I would agree.
However, he asked from the very start to keep it civil.. which, despite what anyone says, it wasn't.
Thus, he locked it.
Way to grandstand MORE then him by making another thread on the already beaten-like-a-dead-horse subject.

It was cowardly to make the hit-and-run insult-and-lock tactic on the flame. There's no excuse for it. It's not altruistic; it's cowardly. It's not done in the interests of keeping the peace; it's done in the interest of getting in the last word.
If you're going to lock it, just lock it. Don't try to get in the last word. It makes you look like a petty coward. Diadem, you're fired.
