I was the one of ther 100 or so external testers on the game. I must admit that I probably did worse at helping balance that game than I did any other.
The testing I did with older activision games was diffrent than most of the more recent tests I did. With Interstate 76, Dark Regin, etc... the developers actully listened to what I had to say. In starcraft and the like, I was just a number. I stopped being an external tester when I turned professional (Dreamcast, PSX, PC). When ASC Games, the company that took me under their wing, went under, about half of the employees went to web development. I said I wanted to stay in the game industry, and ended up as an asp.net programmer once I graduated. I still plan to start my own gaming company.

On the one hand I have to agree with Kermitov here. I mean, it's the internet. And he's not even doing anything as offensive as saying we should all convert to Islam ala rinard. He's just been, to be frank, stupid, and even if I kicked him around in the flame thread I can't really bring myself to hate anything just for a little stupidity on the net of all places.
On the other hand that's just me personally. I don't think it's right to flame him, but I have to admit that even though I don't think it's right for a guard to use lethal force on a civilian walking into a line marked 'DO NOT GO ACROSS THIS LINE OR I SHOOT YOU', by walking across the line the civilian should nonetheless expect to get shot. Such is Somthor, except he drew that line himself, marked it "Don't come over here or you will shoot me" and left a fully-loaded AK-47 by said line.
In closing I would like to say that this may be the least productive 50 minutes I have ever spent on this Earth or ever will.

I just made it a flame thread becuse people were likly gonna flame anyway might as well make it ok to do so.
I love CIV you did a great job diaem except I get annoyed that the AI has the ability to constantly cross your borders at will and if you tell them to leave you can get war declared on you. yet as soon as you enter another countries territory they call you to the carpet and you ahve the choice of either to leave or declare war, and no option to jsut ignore it. the AI jsut keeps entering your space turn after turn.

You can't be a professional without getting paid for your work. So yes .
As for getting fired, it depends where he was fired. A lot of places have a high turnover rate. Also, a lot of gaming companies are structured differently. ASC was VERY picky about who they hired (there were about half a dozen of us testers, iirc) while many companies just hire a lot of kids at low pay.
note: This is for publishers; I don't have too much knowledge of developers.

I was just an external tester for Civ.. so don't give me too much credit.
A lot of companies just give thier external testers free copys of the games. There's a huge diffrence between testing a game at home and working at a company. I got a poster for testing Postal and a keychain for I76, but not cash - you generaly don't get paid for external tests. This goes doubly for now, when most companies rely on massive amounts of testers to make their games and look at feedback from generic forms instead of working with a small amount of indivudal testers.
At ASC I worked 9-5 in house. It was a job, that's why I got paid. I was an independant contractor so they could just not rehire me if they didn't like me with no worries. It was a summer job. Before my job was over I was pulled aside and told I could be a full time employee next year. They went under before I could go back. I also did a bit more than just "beta test." I helped americanise some games, decided what games were even worth our time that various developers submitted to be published, and helped vastly change certain gameplay elements in games.
It's actully kind of a shame how it works. The publishers get way too much credit... in my opinion, the majority of the talent is from the Developers and the Publishers get a lot of the pay and glory. The publisher even tells the developer how to modify their game so it'll sell better. Plus, as a developer it's difficult to get any advancement. Do well for a publisher, and there is a lot of room for advancement. As a developer, it's easy to get trapped in your current job. If you are too good at what you do there, you could trap yourself there if you stay with your company.
So as a gross generalization, developers start off with great pay but don't have too much room for advancement. Many of them burn out or go crazy. Publishers start with many people in the bottom but talent can quickly advance to better positions with better pay. This is from information from people who were in the industry a long time.
