I was in the beta, and I found it very fun, but I levelled my Terran Trader (I was one of the pioneers who forged the trade routes, don't-cha-know) up extremely quickly and discovered a lack of high level content.
Did they ever get around to putting more in?

Last time I played they did, not sure to what extent. I had the same problem you did, with my Enforcer.

I still have screenshots of items like "Romance Novels" that the progen liked (For some reason), and data cubes that "Could hold the entirety of an english encyclopedia... or one half of a tri-d game".
There were only like, 2 very profitable things, though. And after you'd explored the entire friggin galaxy, there was only three years worth of mining asteroids for exploration xp left to do to get to 50..
