Evercrest Coding Contest

Theme: Create a multiplayer game. Any type of multiplayer game. It can be web based, client/server based, telnet based, or whatever... you can even make a pen and paper or card game provided you can somehow distribute the pieces to everyone for free (via printable pdf or whatever).

Rules: Help other people out with their projects if asked. Don't fuck with each other’s work. You may work in teams

Time: Start coding on Jan 10th. Demos may be released starting Feb 1st. Voting will be on march 1st.

Prize: Jack and shit, and jack left town

How to join – (if you have not already joined) Post in this thread or contact diadem@connecticon.org You may join at any time before the contest is over, but may not start coding until Jan 10th.

How to announce your game for people to play it - Simply make a new thread and post how people can get your game, and whatever other necessary information is needed. You may not distribute your game before feb 1st.

How voting works – A thread will be created on March 1st listing every game submitted. Evercrsters will vote on their favorite game. Simple as that.

Exceptions – If you chose to modify an existing game engine or create a mod for a game, it must 1) be distinguishable from the original and 2) not violate the game’s license 3) include the fact it is a mod in your game's description

I have a good board game Idea, which I can do everything for EXCEPT what this contest is actually for.

Can us artist/writer/designers get a pure coder to help us do something instead or is it just for the coders, and they can get help? Do have to be a coder, I guess is what I am asking.

Of course, I'd probably be unable to finish it anyway, within the time frame... Too much in my life to contend with. But it's a general question.

It doesn’t matter how you go about making your game. What matters is that you make one, and it can be played with more than one person. I don’t want to hinder anything creative. If you can find a coder to do what you want, great. Go for it. If you can’t and want to just make a tabletop board game instead, great. The only problem with the tabletop board game would be getting it to voting evercrest members.

I apologize for the delay. It would seem only Blindy and I competing. As far as I am aware Blindy is still working on his game (though I can not speak for him), and there were too many personal things that came up that prevented me from completing my game. The lack of competition and the like removed a lot of the inspiration from the players involved and deterred others from joining. None the less, be rest assured you will see the demos, they are just delayed.

Personally, the main reason my demo is late is that there were simply too many personal matters I had to deal with (mainly dealing with purchasing a new house, car, and the like). I had to make sacrifices to reach these goals, and the game was one of them. I have not given up on the game, even if I have to officially disqualify myself from the contest. I will complete my demo, it will just take longer than I originally expected.

After Blindy and I release the demos, I'm thinking of having this competition on a wider scale. The small amount of competition and more importantly unreasonably short timeframe seem to be this contests two biggest problems.

Fortunately, one of the points of this competition was to learn from its mistakes. In that we will succede.

Summary for lazy people: They are coming, they are just gonna be late.

it's been 3 years since I did any C++ coding, but it's comming back. The biggest issues have been with the server/client packet structure and handling card effects dynamically based off relitive elemental strengths and resistances. I've had issues designing a data structure that gracefully handled the nexus and power point concepts as well.
