Dual booting is *really* easy. 
Also, if you're willing to spend money on a second computer, you could purchase a copy of VMWare and run a bunch of virtual boxes. IMO, this is easier than working on actual hardware because if you really mess something up, it's extremely easy to nuke your OS image and create a new one from scratch. You can also test multiple environments (Linux, FreeBSD, etc).

That's more or less what I did, and then my gaming box's mobo died... so until then I'm stuck with this one and I don't feel like putting Windows back on it NOW...
