Like, some transiever that plugs into the headphone jack, and then two ear pieces that hook around the back of your ear and have something go into your ear. They have cordless everything, they have to have cordless headphones...

I've seen them even a few years back for TV/stereos. Haven't seen 'em recently though.

I have some right next to me actually. My little brother has had a set for a year or two now, and I got mine a few months ago. We use them for our computers in lieu of traditional speakers. They're pretty good, although a little staticy at times. They're also bulkier than you imagined, but it's only a little more so than your average headphones.

You can get em pretty cheap and good at Radio Shack...or anywhere else.

They have their own batteries or go off of the cd players/iPods battery?

They would probably pull too much power from a CD/iPod/whatever. Only seen 'em used on something that is getting power from another source. I may be ignorant on new stuff though.

They need their own batteries.

I think he meant the actual transmitter itself, since I think it would be a pretty power hungy beast.

Yeah, but last I checked I don't think we've found a way to magically transfer electrical/chemical energy from one location to another.

I dunno about using em for an iPod. The transievers we have are actually little towers in and of themselves, probably an inch wider and three times taller than an iPod would be, and they plug into power strips.

Yeah...all you'd need to do is trick whatever you're sending it to into thinking it's being sent something and bam, perpetual energy right there.

I'm sure it could be done somehow, someday, but we certainly don't know how at the moment.

Is this something that exists (even in early and practically unusable forms) or is it just theoretical?

You could, in theory, use inducted currents with variable magnetic fields to create a certain current without a centralized source. But it'd either be very sensitive to the location in that field, or the field would be widespread and so powerful it wouldn't be healthy for most electrical appliances. =p

Theoretical. It certainly couldn't be used on a small scale for Delidgamond's stupid headphones. I don't know about large scale (from space). The first question that comes to mind would be "what if it was misguided?"

To be fair, it kind of does exist. A microwave oven emits energy that speeds up the water inside it. I imagine the effort required to use it outside of a container would be enormous.

I'd love to get a wireless station. Like the kind you plug into the TV, set on top, and have one station near your couch or whatever that regular headphones can plug into.

If I was rich as all fuck ( ), I'd buy that, then two sets of the bose sound cancelling headphones to stop THE FUCKING BIRDS FROM RUINING MY SHOWS.

I'm gonna strangle each and every one of those fuckers someday. Until then, I still have to feed and water 'em. Bastards.

Agree wth the first part, the second sounds like an Edison quote. (He was jealous and took every oppertunity to downplay Tesla's electrical contributions.)

Actually Tesla proved it could be done, though there are limitations as to what you can power using the basic setup. The Tesla coil was primarily developed as a means of power distribution without the need for a grid system.

The transmitters would not drag too much power out of an ipod, the do not sap any power since the tower runs off of AC power from the wall jack and the Headphones themselves are self powered.

The headphones do not require their own batteries (Not mine anyway), and the tower plugs into an AC outlet. It both transmits, and charges the headphones. The headphone batteries are internal.

There are no wireless headphones that do not have a powered transmitter tower. There are no transmitter towers small enough to be powered by batteries that can be carried around. There really isn't any point either... If you are walking around with your iPod or Walkman with you, the wire isn't an issue. Wireless headphones are only usefull if the source you are transmitting is stationary, and you move around with the HEADPHONES. Which is why you would have wireless headphones anyway... Wireless headphones on a walkman or similar just sounds retarded. They are already mobile.

Not theoretical. It's been done (albeit on small scales).

In fact, there's a considerably growing movement to build an orbiting satellite that gathers solar power from a massive array and beams it down to a power station on Earth. (Growing to the point where it might actually be on NASA's agenda within the next several years unless some special interests manage to derail the project.)

hmm, I had an electric toothbrush, waterproof, rechargeable. The recharging base was just a plastic stick that you set the toothbrush on. I theorised that the plastic stick held an AC electromagnet and that the toothbrush had a coil assembly in it and that this recharged the toothbrush. One of these days I'm going to open it up and see

umm, I guess my point is... electricity with no contact points
even though it's not the same. I think it's pretty cool

That was a long RQG, and I had no idea it was being done. I did some googling and didn't come up with much that was useful. Glad to see it might be done (there are many other uses that come to mind).
