The only downside is it's much bigger and heftier than an iPod (which is much more expensive) or a Nomad Zen (inferior sound quality). It's still smaller than a Discman so it'll fit in a pants pocket just fine.

Battery lasts longer, $130 cheaper, it's not all gay and trendy, and you aren't patronizing apple. Sounds like a winner to me. [ 12-01-2003: Message edited by: Maradon! ]
This is what I have...

I love it, but then again I don't have the requirement of putting 10+ gigs of mp3s on a single device. 512MB is more than enough for me and the flash drive format has other advantages. =)
What's a good ~free~ program that allows me to convert my CD collection to the MP3 format?

either cdex or exact audio copy (here's a tutorial: http://mdk1516.home.mindspring.com/misc/EAC%20setup.txt)
as for good MP3 players, the iPod is a perennial favourite for ease-of-use and looks, the jukebox zen series (regular, NX, and xtra) are all a good value, and offer better sound quality, they're all roughly the same size, but the NX and xtra are slightly thinner and lighter, and the xtra has a better screen.
For the best audio quality, iRiver is the way to go. You can run a good set of cans straight out of the headphone jack where normally you'd need an amp. They sound quite amazing, and they'll be a prime candidate for quality listening.
Also remember to budget for a good set of headphones if you don't already have some. Good candidates would be Koss KSC-35's (on a budget) or portapros. Sennheiser HD-202 or 212 for closed cans or HD-497 for open. Grado SR-60 or 80's. I'd stay away from any sony offering below the CD-1700 mark.
No, Really. Bite me.
