Could any of you kind folks summarize what the heck has happened? Because reading Penny Arcade, it sounds pretty interesting.
I would greatly appreciate it ^.^
OP's just a little whiner who's upset over Chewbacca and Anakin dying.
Everything's not a playpen in EU anymore, people are getting hurt, :(((((
It's not something people hear about.

You have a Race called the Yuuzhan Vong come in from outside the Galaxy. They are a fanatical religious race of warriors and Nomads. They Hate anything that is not purely organic. All thier ships and weapons are geneticly engineered and grown over time. They also see pain as a way to salvation.
On top of all this the Jedi can not see them with the force. They do actually exist in the force. However it is kinda like one of us trying to see Ultraviolet light. Just as that is outside of what our eyes can see, this new race is outside the abilities of the Jedi to see.
This race basicly walks all over the New Republic. They can strip shields from ships and thier weapons are very powerful. However, over time the New Republic starts to win some battles by countering some of the nastier things.
However in this time Chewie dies as does Anikin Solo.
In addition Jacen Solo is captured by the Vong and through the help of an Old Jedi who has been thier "pet" He not only escapes but learns a lot of new and interesting things about the force.
The Homeworld Fell to the Vong and they started Terraforming it to be a copy of thier original world. However while Jacen Was captured he became "friends" with the creature that controls the new world and has convinced it to throw a wrench into the Vongs plans. THings never go quite right as the planet grows. Nothing huge, but little things really slow them down a lot.
While all this is going on you have a group of outcast Vong called the Shamed ones. They come to see the Jedi as saviors and start to slowly worl towards overthrowing thier leaders and trying for a more peaceful solution. They don't do very well however.
Finally you have a planet that seems to be the key to everything. It is a World that is alive. It can use the force to some extent and communicates with The Jedi once they find it. At first you think it is just a weapon. However as of the last book I read (number 18) it appears that this world may actually be the homeworld of the Vong. How it came to the Galaxy is not known. However it can entery Hyperspace.
A lot of people hate the NJO books. They don't like that older characters are dying off and that new ones are talking thier place. They don't like that some of the perceptions of the force are changing. However they loose sight of one simple fact:
In a universe as vast as the Star wars Universe, you must move things on and change. THe old stories were becoming stale and repetetive. The old characters were becoming old. New Blood was needed and it has been given.
Yeah it sucked the Chewie died. However it was a better death than writing about him dying of old age in bed. Han Solo is in his late 50s by the timeline given. Luke and Leia are in thier early 50s. A lot of the older characters are dead or dying of old age. Akbar is about to kick the bucket. Mon Mothma died, etc, etc.

Then there's the "revelations" about the Force. Remember the whole Light Side/Dark Side thing? The bit that years of Jedi/Sith warfare have been based on? The moral and ethical basis for the Jedi order? Okay forget it. Turns out there is no Light Side and Dark Side. It's all a perception. Guess the Emperor just really sucked at channelling the Force, seeing as how it was consuming him at an accelerated rate and when he died he kept getting tossed into what he described as a Dark Side Maelstrom. Yoda was wrong. All the Jedi for thousands of years were wrong, and none of them had the foggiest notion. Fuck it.
There's change, and new things (I like the idea of a sentient planet, I like the idea of a race able to cloak themselves from the Force), and then there's some dickhead writer thinking that taking canon and jettisoning it out of the airlock is a good idea.

You just need one of those sloth creature thingys.

What bugs me about NJO is that it doesn't build too well off of the older stuff. In the post-RotJ books, for instance, it builds up that the THREE kids of Han and Leia (Jacen, Jaina, Anakin) were going to all grow up and lead the New Jedi Order into a golden age. And then his NJO stuff comes out and it seems like one of the first things they do is off Anakin. Great. Just fucking lovely. Then there's the "revelations" about the Force. Shit happens. Shit sanctioned by Lucas.
Grow up.
It's not something people hear about.

The ysalamiri only push away the force. They are still in the force, but create an area around them that the normal Force flows of energy are pushed back. Their predator, the vornskr, actually hunts creatures and people by their use of the Force, and it can find the ysalamiri just fine.
The Vong aren't there what so ever. They are like blank spots in the Force.

Yeah! How DARE George Lucas change things he created and painstakingly built over thirty years!
Lucas is informed of and has a say in every major change that goes on in the books. Some are even his idea. Like Chewbacca's death.
What it boils down to is this. The force is one Huge fucking power. It is neither good nore evil, nore Light or dark. If a race that was incapable of evil was to use the force, then it would not suddenly turn evil because it used the force and tapped into what the Jedi think of as the "dark side".
The force magnifies what is inside a person. It is power. Just like a person can do good things if they are in a position of power. They must guard against themselves using that power for evil. It is the same way with the force. The darkness isn't from the force. It is from inside a person. THe corruption comes from thier own desire for power. And really in every case where a Jedi has fallen this has been the case. They had a reason to fall. They didn't just suddenly wake up one morning in thier comfy bed and go "Today I am going to go kill some people and become a Sith Lord". No. They had something happen that drove them there, or already had a lust for power.
And yes. The Jedi masters have been wrong for thousands of years. About 30,000 accourding to common knowlege actually. However it is possible that at one point the truth was known. Remember that the oldest books we have are of stories that happened about 5,000 years before "A New Hope". Around the time of Naga Sadow I think. And even then the Jedi had lost much of thier knowlege. It only takes one person in the distant past to pass on some bad information for things to be royaly fucked up.
And finally. Lucas approved every major plot point in every book. You have come back to the argument about some writing going off and killing the characters on his own. Well it doesn't happen like that. Lucas had this very well planned out. Do you really think he would allow some 2 bit writer to kill of his major characters?
