I know because of where I live and work what I see around me isn't "normal" but it begs me to question how society can function as well as it does...

for those of you who work 9-5, do you actually care about doing a high quality job, or are you only there to do just enough to keep your job? I take pride in my work and work overtime if I have to, and try not to cut corners. This seems to be an exception.

For example, some companies we work with don't do things on time because they just don't bother or care. It's too much trouble to press a button or make something that works. My building's "emergency" maintenance man never returns his calls. If there is a broken bulb in the halls, security guards change it because the maintenance workers don't give a crap. Call Dell tech support and try to find someone who does their job. Now I know there has to be some people somewhere who actually care about doing a good job in what they do, but for the most part everything I see around me is very minimalistic.

So my question is to you, working people, do you actually do your job "right" or do you cut corners because there is no direct advantage for you to do your job correctly?

Also, do you lie to your customers for any reason?

If you do not like your job, most people tend to function along the lines of "Office Space" - only working hard enough to not be fired. At least this is what I've been able to discern.

I'm currently "Office Spacing".

Why? Because I dont want to be here any more. I hate this place and I generally hate where I live now. I just want to go home... Home is where Tamara is.

Other then that, I normally pour my heart and soul into my work. I used to do it here, but as stated above, I no longer feel the need.

currently trudging along "office spacing" but only because I dont know where the position is going. Generally if I like what im doing, I go above and beyond the call without question or hesitation.

well, I work a crappy part time job, but I give it my all. I try to make the customer feel like they got good value from dropping by. That means being truly pleasant and doing the small things right.

The only place I really slack is in the "chean shit until it sparkles" department. I'll do a good job, it's clean, but unless we're having an inspection or a bigshot is dropping by, it won't shine. It'll leave you clean if you touch it, and it'll look clean, but it won't be "MY GOD THAT'S CLEAN!!!"

I'm of the opinion that if you pretend to enjoy your job, and give it your all as a consequence, you'll actually enjoy it.

As for lying to customers, depends on what it is.

"Is the boss in?" Nope, sorry, he's gone home for the day, but I'll take your number and give it to him. (and then hand it to him)

*customer does something insanely stupid* "oh wow, now I feel dumb" Oh no Ma'am, people do that exact same thing all day long. It's just that we have really poorly designed (insert thing here).

tell them what they need to hear.

When I worked my old McJob at Tim Hortons.... dunno, I didn't WANT to be there, but I didn't hate the job at the same time. It was just a place I went to.

Yeah, I cut corners hilariously. Some things minimum wage just isn't enough for Well, that and half of the 'procedures' for things were so hilariously assbackwards that in doing so the 'proper' way we would just spend more time getting less job done in the first place, heh.
(Man, when we had no supervisors in the store and regular employees like I was were the ones forced to train the trainees ((At one point we had trainees training trainees, that was how bad it was. Those slew of people had NO idea how to do ANYTHING)) I don't think I actually taught anyone even a single 'actual' way of how to do any single chore in that store. But in the end, the end results were as good if not better than the 'proper' way, and you saved a buttload of time)

Lied to customers? Hell, our manager informed us many a time that we would get in trouble for telling the truth, and lying or just glazing over certain facts was the way to go about many things, heh. Otherwise, I would lie to the customer if I had deemed them a waste of my valuable oxygen and I decided a lie could potentially cut the time shorter that I had to deal with them so I could get to a customer that didn't inspire an urge to purge humanity.

Hell, for the rare times I wanted a person to never, EVER come back to the store... you know what I told them? The truth about what they were eating. Worked like a charm. People WANT to be lied to near as I can figure

I attribute it to me not actually caring about the job. While I did not actively pursue losing the job, if that eventuality had come up I wouldn't have lost any sleep over it. I did enjoy the job for the most part though since most of my co-workers were really great people.

Can't comment on the hordes upon hordes of idiots that appear to make up a startlingly large percentage of the population though. I had hope for humanity before I worked serving the public, now I understand we will wipe ourselves out in the very near future if the people I had served were allowed to procreate.

In the end, we did our jobs. We cleaned what we were supposed to, and served the customers like we were supposed to. We also did shit we weren't supposed to, like sitting down or eating. But in doing those things, we got the jobs done they wanted us to. And when they finally decided they had had enough of our sitting and eating and speaking to one another and set out to try and eliminate it... well, then people just stopped caring and crap stopped getting done. Never understood it, I mean, we did what they wanted us to do, serve customers and clean what we are supposed to, so I don't see why they would have a problem with us sitting around and talking when there were no customers, it wasn't like we were neglecting our duties. But then they had to go and be managers, and the store just went to hell. Was fun to watch though.

At Target I Office Spaced. The job was horrible, my superiors dicked around with me, and I just generally hated everyone I spoke with.

Where I am now, we do the best job we possibly can. Reputation is everything here.

When things are slow, I kinda "Office Space". I admit, I'm a bit lazy when I allow myself to be.

But, I'm also not used to having free time at work. Alot of the time I just have too much to do and too little time to do it in to "Office Space". High stress to borderline panic is more the norm for me.

Yah, I'll cut corners where I can to buy myself some time if I need it, but alot of the time I can't because it will just cost me more time later on.

I believe in the existance of magic, not because I have seen proof of its existance, but because I refuse to live in a world where it does not exist.

I like to smile, feed them a line of shit until they seem happy, and give them the finger as they walk off.
They say a smile is a gift which is free to the giver and precious to the recipient. But giving the finger is free too, and I find it more personal and sincere.

I take a lot of pride in my code, and I do the best possible job I can do with it. Mainly because if I do it right the first time, I don't have to bother with fixing it later.

I don't work any extra hours on it though. Our current management philosophy is if you've got more than 40 hours worth of work to do, then things need to be reprioritized so you don't. It's a bit like Extreme Programming in that regard.

Lol I wish my company were that organized. Most of the extra hours come from last minute "must be done by tomorrow" deadlines and the incompetence of a single co-worker. But I do what I have to do.

I "Office Space" most of my day at work. I hate my job, as does 80% of the people who work there. Lately i've just stopped careing if i keep my job or not, I actually try to get fired and can't.

I have to walk/run around in a warehouse all day picking up boxes of produce and dairy products and I'm timed while I doo all this. I'm supposed to finish my pick (1 - 30 pages of stickers for the products) in 95% of the alloted time.
I get anywhere from 20% - 70% on all of my picks and they fire the other employees who pull 80% - 100% because they aren't working hard enough.

I've tried to get fired but all my company does is fire the good workers! I even get raises!
