OK, onto the better part of the topic, what are you reading? Whats your favorite book and what are you reading currently thats any good. Or Books that your reading that you hate. Spill the beans. Once I finish Lone Drow and Dead Center I'm gona be out of books again.
<Niklas> Merely stating a fact, my good man.
<Ozius> Damn that was an entertaining book.
<JooJooFlop> What book is this?
<Ozius> Savage Membrane
* Alaan claims ignorane
<JooJooFlop> What's it about?
<Alaan> *ignorance
<Alaan> that couldn't have come off at a worst time
<Ozius> Think 'noir detective story' meets 'Night Of The Living Dead' plus a nice hint of Lovecraft and Derlith.
<Ozius> Which is right up my metaphorical alley...might not hit the spot for you folks though.
<JooJooFlop> So what kind of zombies does it have?
* JooJooFlop loves zombies.
<Ozius> JooJoo...I think this is the start of a new friendship
<Ozius> Anything with zombies...I've seen it, played it, read it, etc.
<Ozius> Well, we've got three as far as I can understand. The kind that are crazy and flesh-eating, ghouls and then one created by the antagonist of the story. Hard to explain but for 15 bucks, well worth it.
<Niklas> Would it still be worth it for 16 bucks? o_O
*** Holden has quit IRC
<Ozius> Yes.
<Niklas> Good, I'm looking for a new book ¬_¬
* Alaan follows the time honored method of book purchasing of dumb luck
<Niklas> I usually do that
<Ozius> I just found the book today at my local comic shop.
<Alaan> I wander around looking at things until something catches my eye. Even if something has the most vague explanation ever I'll buy it
<Niklas> Plug: Hey, there are some undead in the Malazan Book of the Fallem (series by Steven Erikson)
<Alaan> ALmost without fail its something good
<Niklas> well, sort of undead anyway
<Niklas> Aaand I guess it doesn't really center around them ¬_¬
<Ozius> Explain.
<Niklas> Well, there have been several civilisations. The original Human type civilisation was under control by a race of very powerful beings for a very long time
* Alaan wonders about SpyBots "icons for the blind"
<Niklas> These beings controlled them by pretending to be gods. (Only some of them, the so-called Tyrants of their race. Most of them lived peacefully but some went mad and dud stuff like that)
<Niklas> er, did
<Niklas> The 'humans' found out and started to fight back and eventually gained ground but realised that their civilisation would not survive until all these tyrants had been wiped out unless they did something drastic
<Niklas> Solution: undeath
<Niklas> The current main civilisation is a human one too but the undead ones are still around, hunting down the remaining tyrants etc. etc.
<Niklas> (names left out although I don't really know why)
<Alaan> Amazing. Undead that aren't evil
<Ozius> Not amazing.
<Alaan> True.
<Niklas> Well, whether they are evil or not is yet to be shown
<Ozius> In the story I just read, the protaganists friend and...secratry of sorts is undead.
<Alaan> It is fairly rare to have "good" undead though
<Ozius> Fairly rare.
<Niklas> Mind you, so far the story doesn't revolve around these undead as such although they are a major part of it
<JooJooFlop> Hard to imagine undead as anything but evil.
<Niklas> The first book in the series isn't amazing but it sets the scene well. The second book absolutely rules
<Teggamite[WTW]> Hyperion seems to be a good book.
<Niklas> Hyperion is good. I need to find the second book in that series ¬_¬
<Teggamite[WTW]> I'm reading it now.
<Teggamite[WTW]> But Endymion is not at my library, for alas, it has been lost.
* Alaan hugs our library systems web page
<Teggamite[WTW]> Mine has one too.
<Alaan> Can order any book in the system online and it shows up at your local library a few days later
<Teggamite[WTW]> It's just listed as 'lost'.
* Niklas is currently reading "Fool's Fate"
<Alaan> Like 20 libraries attached to it, so just about everything around
<Teggamite[WTW]> heh
<Teggamite[WTW]> I was suprised to find Hyperion at all.
<Teggamite[WTW]> Which reminds me - I think I shall search it for HP Lovecraft books.
<Teggamite[WTW]> Which reminds me - I think I shall search it for HP Lovecraft books.
* Alaan updates Spybot
<Teggamite[WTW]> I think we have a storm. Somewhere.
<Ozius> Lovecraft is worth some time.
<Teggamite[WTW]> Indeed.
<Teggamite[WTW]> I bought a good compilation of some of his stories, but I seek the rest.
<Teggamite[WTW]> And most of the other books I could find had an insufficient lovecraft/imitator ratio.
<Ozius> I'd like to say that he is awesome and such but I know I'll incur the wrath of someone saying it's cliched of me to say that or something...but I'd say his works are worth your time.
<Teggamite[WTW]> And people writing about the same stuff doesn't seem...right.
<Teggamite[WTW]> I can say this: He was messed up.
(sorry for length but it's all to do with the topic )

So, first of all im looking for a copy of Romance of the Three kingdoms.
Secret Santa, I'm looking in your direction!

Right now I'm currently reading both Dao De Jing and The book of Five Rings.
Reading two books at once sucks

And I'm currently reading Neal Stephenson's first novel of the Baroque Cycle, Quicksilver. It's sort of a follow-up to his Cryptonomicon, that tells the story of the ancestors of the first book, and it takes place in the late 17th and early 18th century, after The Hundred Years War in the time of Newton, Leibniz, Hooke and the like. It's not entirely historically accurate. The author did take some allowances, but he also made this clear in his intro, so I find it okay. Makes me want to go out and read up more on what really happened, especially since he gave a good list of reference books at the beginning.

When I say 2 at once, its normally huge chunks of each one, or a full reading then a switch (Both are fairly short)
I like to read em multiple times though. Great books, highly recommended

I've done that when I was currently reading a book and then like, the newest Terry Pratchett came out. I would drop everything and read the Pratchett, then go back to the former once I was finished.
Or sometimes I'm just not in the mood for the current one, and pick up another that I am in the mood for.

EDIT: Specifcally, Seven Japanese Tales. Fascinating the historical perspective one gains through literature. [ 11-09-2003: Message edited by: Karnaj ]

Hello Cuthy had this to say about Tron:
So, first of all im looking for a copy of Romance of the Three kingdoms. Problem is I can't remember who translated it best. Little help needed there.OK, onto the better part of the topic, what are you reading? Whats your favorite book and what are you reading currently thats any good. Or Books that your reading that you hate. Spill the beans. Once I finish Lone Drow and Dead Center I'm gona be out of books again.
Currently I'm reading: The Inferno by Dante (cant remember how to spell his last name)
Its a good book, but since its from the 1300's its all written in poem form, but being thus no matter what version of the book you get it will have notes with it, so it makes it interesting. Anyways, its about hell and the tortures people go through for their sins. Strangely its written in a way that doesn't preach the Bible, but yet hints the Catholic religion through out it.
Also, The Magus by John Fowls was faily good if you want a twisted mind teaser book. Its more philisophical but its still a pretty good read.
Yes, both of these are literary intense novels, especially The Inferno, but being a literary novel it has that realism of todays society but still that kinda mystical stuff through out it. The Magus is more of a realistic teaser so it isn't quite as mysterious although it does make you think. Guess it just depends on what your into, but in my personal opinion both these books are worth spending some time on.
