The river shimmered quietly as it wound on its sparkling way through the plains of Karana. A half-elf, dressed in a simple chain mail tunic and leather armor lacking ornamentation and wearing a mace at his belt, knelt down next to the waters. He took out a bar of soap and a wash-cloth, and began to clean his face. When he was finished, he filled his water-skin and got to his feet, heading westward . . .

A ranger traversed the plains, heading east from a risky expedition into Surefall Glade. Besides the wildlife surrounding him, the plains were mostly devoid of people. He moved swiftly over the tall grass, ignored by the lions, bears and other creatures as he passed them. A figure walking in his direction near the bank of the nearby river caught his attention. His sharp eyes quickly identified the person as a half elf. He cursed to himself as he ducked behind a rock, sure that the half elf had seen him. His bluish-black hands instinctively nocked an arrow, but he did not pull the bowstring back.

*Creeeeeek*

The sounds of moving water in the river, the rustle of tall grass and the gentle swaying of a tree were all that filled Taihei's ears as the human monk meditated in the vast Plains of Karana. The spot he had chosen was a good distance from the beaten path, which most travelers would use in order to brave the lesser threat of bandits rather then face some of the nastier creatures known to roam the Plains. Exhaling in a long and carefully measured breath, Taihei opened his eyes. He had detected the slightest disturbance in the soft wind, was someone coming his way?

Standing up, the monk was at first not easily visible. Clothed in a simple, dark-green robe he blended in with the grass and the tree, but the keen eye of someone looking for him would eventually spot the average-height, dark blue haired human. Scanning the horizon with brown eyes, Taihei looked for the source of the disturbance.
~Probably just a lion or a bear.~ The monk thought, running a worn hand through his hair and taking one last look around his general area.

That one last look halted when he spotted two figures a fair distance from where he was standing. The movement of one figure, ducking behind a rock, was the motion which caught his attention. The other figure was currently walking towards the rock, and heading in Taihei's general direction. Taihei had always had a strong sense of sight, which served him well when he saw what the first figure was doing with his bow. Weighing the possibilities, the monk decided to act.

Moving as quietly as possible, still a good distance from the two travelers, Taihei stayed low in the grasses, using natural cover to hide his movements...

Gan stopped for a moment, having recieved a vague impression of motion from out of the corner of his eye. He waited a few moments for signs of movement, but seeing none continued on his way, whistling an old elven hymn . . .

The half-elf was nearing the person hiding behind a rock with a loaded bow, and Taihei was closing in on both of them. For a moment it looked as though the half-elf had spotted the monk hiding in the grasses, but then the elf kept walking and relieved Taihei's fears.

A few seconds later, down in a crouch, Taihei bent an arm back, then threw a small pebble into the air so that it would land perfectly on the dark-elf's head...

It is a dark-elf with the bow right?

ooc: Yes it is

Tanuvian's head twisted as the pebble landed and his eyes scanned the grass around him. It swayed back and forth with the wind. He stood up slightly to get a better look. The stillness of one spot caught his eye and he took a closer look and saw two eyes looking back at him. He quickly fired a warning shot that brushed the monk's ear.

"Identify yourself!" he yelled. He realized his mistake as the half elf near the river turned and saw him.

Taihei rose from the grass, a lot closer to Tanuvian then the dark-elf would have thought he was hiding. In fact, Taihei was standing no more then a couple feet from Tanuvian. The monk crossed his arms over his chest and glared at the dark-elf.
"I am Taihei, monk of the Silent Fist. What are you doing in these plains Tier'dal? Hunting half-elves perhaps?"

Gan's eyes widen in shock as the dark elf rises from concealment, and then again when the monk erupts from the grass as well. His expression quickly runs from shock to outrage however.

"By our Lady, I can't even walk the plains of old Karana without running into a pair of quarrelsome children! Its as if I never left Felwithe! Honestly the sheer gall of you fellows, scaring a decent servant of our Lady like that!"

Gan jabs his finger into the chest of first Tanuvian's chest and then alternating with Taihei.

"Honestly, no respect! No respect at all! The pair of you should be ashamed of yourselves!"

Continues to lecture and poke for some time, then gradually runs out of steam.

"So what ARE you two doing out here stalking a lonesome cleric of the Earth Mother anyway?"

Taihei frowned, confused by the half-elf. Shaking his head twice to clear it, he turned to face Gan while still keeping Tanuvian in his peripheral vision.
"I am stalking no one, I was meditating by a tree further down the river. Your movements disrupted my meditation and came to investigate who was approaching. That is when I found this dark-elf who appeared to be trying to ambush you..."

Tanuvian looked at the half-elf, obviously confused by his behavior, then took a few steps back while the half elf and the monk were paying attention to eachother.

"Just who the hell do you think you are!?" he said to the half elf with his bow aimed at him.

"Oh . . . well why didn't you say so? Carry on then."

The half-elf turns on Tanuvian.

"And shouldn't I be asking YOU that question, Mr. running-around-ambushing-innocent-people-who-are-minding-their-own-business-type-person?!"

He pauses for a moment and regards the bow with disdain.

"And NOW you're pointing a WEAPON at me!! People nowadays have NO MANNERS I tell you!! None whatsoever!!"

Gan gives Tanuvian another sharp poke, completely ignoring the drawn arrow.

"And you STILL haven't told me why you were lurking about like some footpad out of a bad drama from Freeport! You're lucky that I'm such a calm, patient, forbearing person!"

In a lightning fast action, Taihei's left arm flashed out and his hand closed tightly on the arrow. With a snarl, he snapped the arrow in his hand, and let the two pieces fall to the ground. Glaring, the monk stepped between the dark-elf and the half-elf, facing neither.
"Both of you calm down. Half-elf, step back please and remain quiet." Taihei then turned to Tanuvian.
"What is your quarrel with this half-elf? And if there is no quarrel, why were you hiding from him with your bow drawn?"

Technically (and annoyingly on my part), if Taihei saw Tanuvian's muscles beginning to move in order to release the arrow, he could move his arm up to catch the arrow before it fired. So, his hand would already be on path to catch the arrow as Tanuvian was letting go...and therefore Taihei's hand and the arrow would intersect before the arrow would hit Gan.

A loud bang and a flash of light to the side of the group interrupt everthing. In thier place a small singed gnomish wizard appears. "GOOD GOD, THE BURNING!!!", he then promptly falls over unconcious and twitching. Twitch twitch...

Gan's eyes widen in surprise as the dark elf releases the arrow, and he sighs audibly when Taihei catches it.

"Thank you. People like him really should not be allowed around sharp objects."

He turns back to Tanuvian and pulls up his sleeves . . .

"You sir, are a menace and . . ."

His tirade is interrupted by the appearance of the gnome wizard. He almost falls backward in surprise. He shakes his head irritably then walks over and begins to cast a spell of celestial healing

"Well, at least YOU had the decency not to be stalking people! And I suppose if I want to lecture you properly for such an innappropriate arrival, I really ought to keep you from dying."

Gan completes the spell and sits back on his heels to wait for the gnome to awaken. He turns a stern eye on Tanuvian.

"Let that be a lesson to you. Politeness and kindness FIRST, and THEN heavy weaponry!"

Do you realize how little it takes to move three fingers to fire a bow? By the time one even knows that anything has moved, the arrow has already been released.

I just tried it myself and I can't see even a hint of movement in my arm before the bow would have fired.

I'm sorry, but there is no way in hell you could have seen it coming fast enough to react, much less to make your way over to me in time.

Well you might not see it because after all, you're the one performing the action so your perspective wouldn't cover your entire body. I do however accept that Taihei might not have had a perfect angle of view on Tanuvian either.

Also, Tanuvian "aimed the bow" which would have been a clue that something was about to happen.

Taihei was standing right next to Tanuvian, so there was no "making his way over to him" involved.

Finally, this is a fantasy world. Taihei is an EverQuest monk, so one could assume he is very agile and dextrous, and that his muscles have been trained for rapid movement.

Actually, Tanuvian backed up a ways, so there is a moving over to him part. You realize that all there is involved with actually firing the bow is moving 3 fingers, right? Do you realize how quick and subtle that is?

Yeah I'm not stupid okay? You're holding the bow and arrow taut, you release your fingers and say goodbye to the arrow. That's fine, I'm not saying that it's an obvious and large motion. All I'm saying, is that it's possible, for Taihei to see the action as it is happening, have fast enough reflexes and a sharp enough mind to capture the arrow before it strikes Gan. It's possible.

Yes well, if you HAD fired the bow there would have been unpleasant consequences. I would much prefer that this little argument end and we continue with the story.

I was actually expecting nasty consequences with the way you were just inviting danger. Anyway, my character will just attribute this amazing feat to some sort of magical effect.

"Of all the rotten luck," Tanuvian thought to himself as the monk tossed the arrow aside. He obviously wasn't dealing with some pushover with that monk, but he was curious about the half elf. The way he would so openly confront an armed Tier'Dal while bearing no weapons himself baffled him. "He's either a great fool or a great power."

In any case, he was in a bad situation. He was returning from something he couldn't explain without officially failing the mission, and even if he did explain, he'd probably be in worse trouble than before. He considered fleeing and quickly decided against it. He wouldn't allow himself to be made the fool by these lessers.

"And who are you to tell me how to behave?"

With the days sun bearing down upon his dreadscale armor and blade Shounji walks along the plains trying to escape notice by guards or anyone he just plain doesnt like, unfortunatly his dark greenish brown scales do not fit in well with the grass. Stepping slowly swishing his tail in a rythmic motion Shounji twitches his head to the side as he sees a Dark Elf,Gnome,Human and Half elf all in one spot and apparently in a vivid discussion. With a dark grin he slowly creeps against some mossy rock helping him bvlend in more as he gets as close as he can to atleast be within hearing and spellcasting range.

Gan stood stiffly, chin slightly raised, shoulders back and a fiery green light burning in his emerald eyes.

"Do you mean to tell me that you don't know who you have just assaulted!? Whats the world coming to when bandits wander the plains and don't even bother to see who on Norrath they're molesting?! Its positively shameful!"

"I am Sir Gan deCelestin, royal tutor in etiquette and clerical magic to the Prince and Princess Thex! I was supposed to be on vacation, and instead I am accosted by thugs!"

The half-elf sighed in a martyrly fashion.

"Alas, it seems fated not to be. Well, since you've apparently decided to crash my getaway, I suppose it would be the proper thing to share my lunch with you."

Gan gave another soulful sigh and began unpacking plates, glasses, cutlery, roasted pheasant, steamed vegetables, pizza, cookies, and several jugs of Qeynos Afternoon Tea. He glanced irritably at Taihei and Tanuvian, then glared over at the iksar trying to hide behind the rocks.

"Well, don't just stand about, it is exceedingly rude to keep your host waiting when he's already provided lunch. And stop slinking around back there, you aren't nearly as stealthy as you think! Besides, if you're here to molest a poor innocent cleric as well, you can do it just as well after we eat."

He sighed yet again.

A grin crept over the tiny face that watched the three by the river, sparkling white teeth were hidden in the movement of tall grass that danced to the breeze's gentle touch. Calm fingers brushed through the mustache, along the connected sideburns and up to the crown of his head, where he scratched at the black haired crown.

--aah, the wonders of travellers out in the Karana's--

He had knelt for the last half an hour, moving a small foot every minute of so to sneak up on the human monk, but the two strangers had caused him to bugger off. Now standing, but still barely taller than the grass he decided to watch the show and see if any carnage ensued.
There was always good pickings off corpses.
