So, can anyone suggest any good obscure animes? I'm looking for something along the lines of either fantasy, or giant robots.

obscure? ... most of the good "obscure" animes I knew of became popular *shrugs* and im not sure what you consider to be obscure? the latest "obscure" anime I have liked is read or die, kinda a semi-serious (yet satire) on james bond type films, im not sure if you would like it though...

But, then... it really depends on your audience. I.E most girls(and a couple guys) I know like gravation (I have a feeling you have already seen it though?) I personally haven't seen it (and I watch alot of anime) so I guess its obscure to me, and might fit you well.

Of course, I wouldn't really say those are fantasy/giantrobots... nothing lately I can think of suits all the qualifications you needed. I can think of plenty of old/semi new stuff thats good, but you have most likely seen them. (thats the problem with good anime, it tends to get watched =P ) sorry I couldn't help you more.

Ever heard of Full Metal Panic? It seems like it's known, but not as much as the really well known titles.

It's funny and it's got mechs.

Ninja training. The main character (named Naruto) is disliked by the majority of his ninja village (for a reason I can't say) and he wants to become the best ninja ever to prove to the rest how great he is. He gets paired up with 2 other ninjas (all the trainees are split into groups of 3) one he has a crush on who dislikes him and one he hates because everyone thinks he's so cool. This guy also hates Naruto.

Personally I'm not that much into the ninja anime, but I find this series to be very cool. They do some interesting things with ninjitsu and every ninja seems to have something that makes his/her ability unique to them. Excellent fight scenes, captivating characters and some humor tossed in makes this show an enjoyable experience.

My only beef with it is the ungodly amount of recap they do. On average you spend about 2 minutes of every episode recapping. Average mind you. Sometimes there's no recap, other times there's like 6 minutes worth. The animation style is also one I'm not fond of, but after the first 3 or 4 episodes I got used to it and enjoyed the show immensely.

Far as I know it isn't released in US yet, but you can find fansubs out there. There's like 70 some odd episodes so far I'm told, but I've only managed to snag 48.

edit: added some more

Giant Robo seems pretty obscure.

It's made by Gainax in their pre-Eva days. Much like Kikkaider, it has the quality of a modern anime but uses an older drawing style.

I have not seen all of it, but the first few episodes are good.

For fantasy, track down some fansubs of Vilgust. Only two epps long, but it's better than normal fantasy. It's CHIBI fantasy!

For a somewhat modern fantasy anime, track down Combustable Campuss Guardress. It's set in modern times, but has people that guard a gateway fighting the remains of demons that were trapped in the world thousands of years ago. Be warned, it switches from serious to silly at will, kinda like FLCL does.

For giant robots, track down Macross Plus (easy), and Macross 7 (harder).

I believe in the existance of magic, not because I have seen proof of its existance, but because I refuse to live in a world where it does not exist.

As others have said, watch FLCL. It's really messed up and somehow extremely entertaining. The first manga just came out the other day in retail book stores.

My, that's a helpful list! I must ask though, what's that nifty looking thing you're using for a sigpic?

And on another note, I did get to see Full Metal Panic, and it was very, very good. When it was funny, it was bloody hilarious, and the action was good, too.

On the fantasy lines, I would suggest .hack//sign, its pretty obsucre.

Macross is also good for the Giant Robot section and so Is GETTER ROBO and SHIN GETTER ROBO!

.hack//sign is far far from being obscure..

There aren't many people who don't at least know the premise behind the series.
