I really find this a controversial, or important subject. I couldn't decide weather I should post this in the anime forums or not, but whatever. Someone should sue the guys for doing this.
Unless I'm wrong and they do allow this on TV? Cause I only read Jap/Dub comparisons which could be wrong.
Your saying that in the Japanese version of Sailor Moon they have gay/les scenes that they removed from the american version?
The other option, that I thought you meant at first, was that you just wanted Sailor Moon to have gay/les scenes in it. Just because you want it to have some, and it really irked you that it didn't. That idea is what made my brain hurt trying to figure out the logic.
They can do whatever the fark they want as long as it meets FCC's minimum requirements.
Studio execs in the US want to get as wide an audience as possible for their merchandice, thus getting a profit for their effort at translating the films. This means they want a strong fanbase of adults and children.
The problem is, so much of the US is still very puritanical, many, many parents don't want their children exposed to homosexuality at all. Thus, if they studios include the homosexual themes, they stand a large chance to loose a significant chunk of their market. Thus, in the interests of making the largest profit possible, they edit the dub down to the lowest common denominator, allowing the most easily offended consumer to dictate the values of production.
Wish it wouldn't happen like this, but as long as we have a substantial proportion of our population so homophobic, it will probably remain like this.
I don't condone it either. However I certainly understand why it's done. We live in a capitalistic nation with a very conservative view on issues like homosexuality. The vast majority of the country follows a dogma in which homosexuality is commonly forbidden.
If there was an animated series, American or or Japanese or otherwise, that was targetted towards young kids that dealt with, among the main point of the series, homosexuality in a mature manner, then I think it could find a place.
Unfortunately, anime doesn't even handle heterosexual relationships in a completely mature manner.
