My brother and I have recently began to purchase anime movies, and we need to know whats good and what to avoid like the plague. We have got (so far): Princess Mononoke, and Escaflowne. So we obviously need more..

Another good one is Armitage. Kind of odd, but still good.

Ninja Scroll is good, but very dark.

Miyuki-chan in wonderland should be avoided at all costs.

X is cool, but in a strange way.

The first time you watch it, you MUST be loopy due to lack of sleep, and it must be in a dimly lit room. At some ungodly hour at night works best.

Watch it like that, and you will understand it the first time. Watch it sober/awake/aware, and you won't have a clue what's going on. It's strange, and makes kinda strange plot jumps at some points.

However, the artwork in it is really, REALLY cool. They keep the colors somewhat subdued for most of it, so when they use alot, it really stands out.

I believe in the existance of magic, not because I have seen proof of its existance, but because I refuse to live in a world where it does not exist.

Plastic Little is an interesting movie. So is Kimera.

For series, I recommend Blue Seed, Neon Genesis Evangelion, The Vision of Escaflowne and Trigun.

I second/third the Trigun opinion. I also suggest Cowboy Bebop, Gunsmith Cats, and The Adventures of Mini-Goddess. Whatever you do, stay away from Pokemon, and i've heard Cutey Honey isn't that good either.

Oh yeah, Slayers: the Movie is pretty good, too. And make sure to check out the Cowboy Bebop move, "Knocking on Heaven's Door." I think you can only get it fansubbed, but it's still a great movie.

No! Get Miyku-chan! Get it! Obey the fist!

Janus obviously shouldn't have said:

The stupidity might give it some amusement value, if it had more than two songs, one of which is insanely irritating.

The random quote generator agrees with me! Obey the eye!

Tenchi Muyo! and the associated movies are one of my favorites. In order from best to worst, they go:

1. Tenchi Muyo! (original OAV)
2. Tenchi Muyo: In Love (first movie)
3. Tenchi Universe (first TV series)
4. Tenchi Muyo...um, something or another... damn it. (the third movie, but as you may have guessed, I can't remember the title)
5. Tenchi in Tokyo (totally sucks! seems like it was made to cater to the simpleminded tastes of an American fanboy, present company excepted )

There's also another movie, but I've never seen it, sooo...

As anyone who pays attention to my rare animé posts probably knows, I highly recommend Big O. Giant robots, film noir, and North American artistic influence. Oo er!

Finally, once you've seen so much Japanese animation that it starts becoming predictable and formuliac, watch Project A-Ko

[EDIT] I can't spel!

Once more into the breach, my friends, once more. We'll close the wall with our dead. In peace, nothing so becomes a man as modesty and humility, but when the blast of war blows in our ears, then imitate the action of the tiger, summon up the blood, disguise fair nature with rage and lend the eye a terrible aspect.

Let me narrow it down a bit. I prefer darker anime, especially VHD : Bloodlust (haven't seen the original yet.) My brother enjoyed Gundam, and Outlaw Star, whereas I more enjoyed Cowboy Bebop. Was considering biting a big bullet and getting the NGE box set next, but I'm not sure. May have to wait and get the original VHD...
