Then scream more when he puts a bullet through the woman's head, causing her to turn to dust, and reveal she's a vampire.
That's how Hellsing STARTS. Right after the entirely-too-funky bluesy opening track. In that first ep, you meet Alucard, who you find out as the episode gets on works for the secretive Hellsing Institute as a vampire hunter. You also meet the head of the Institute, Sir Integral Wingates Hellsing, who looks sort of like Allen Shezar from Escaflowne in a suit and glasses.
A Vampire, posing as a priest, has apparently moved into a town... and now no one can contact the town. So the British government (what's with the Brit fetish lately in anime, I wonder - first Read or Die, and now this) sent in a SWAT team. Only one member survives, Victora Celes - who has problems doing things like shooting humans, and is more like a team mascot than anything else. Taken prisoner by the vampire after running from her now-zombied team, as well as terrified by Alucard, she ends up between the two vampires. Alucard is, in fact, what he hunts, as shown by when he's blown away by the zombied SWAT team and pulls himself together, then calls the priest-vampire a 'cheap punk' as he cocks his massive pistol with his teeth.
Alucard then asks Victoria to make a decision, and then shoots THROUGH her (the gun is said to be made from a melted-down silver cross, the bullets are explosive, and the hole is impressive) to take out the vampire. Then Alucard saves her life... in a way.
The reason between the sudden infestations of vampires, an interesting bit of religious conflict, the reason Alucard serves Integral, all get covered. (and yes, we do find out why he's got that particular name, which I know you all noticed.) The only problem is that the last ep ends on an odd note. Rumor has it, though, that once the manga series is complete in Japan, they will be free to finish the anime series, and give the ending.
