I see new screenshots of LDON, see new screenshots of the dungeon adventures, watch people playing, talking about the new lewt, et cetera, and ignore it mostly.

Then I see a screenshot of the 'good old days' of EQ... the fun stuff, like seeing an old-sk00l bard running through Oasis with ~50 deepwater goblins in tow, or a screenshot of someone at the top of Blackburrow, surrounded with dozens of gnoll corpses, or in the tower at the top of CB, with a screenshot of someone floating on Dvinn's head... and it makes me nostalgic and want to play again

I always loved the 'old days' of EQ the most. The most fun I had in the game was long before Velious, Kunark, or the rest...

I agree with you Khyron.

I'd love to return to my days of classic EQ loving. I've tried to go back to new eq.. and it just sucked.

I agree too Khyron, the game just kept getting stupider and stupider until I quit. All of my fond memories of EQ when I think back, are about original EQ, and never any of the expansions.

Pretty much impossible, I tried that. Got the most old school looking UI I could find, and tried avoiding the expansions... But everyone else has at least Kunark, and pretty much all the expansions. Can't do that in a multiplayer game =p

Apart from that... Yes, pretty much agreed the game went from a challenging treadmill to a boring treadmill. Not a fair trade.

Yeah, the initial fun of being an EQ noob was just entirely too much fun, possibly because we've never seen it before. I remember being Garlaan the level 5 Magician, scared as hell entering Blackburrow, creeping through slowly always checking around for gnolls (which amazed me to see). Then the journey I made from Qeynos to Freeport, actually having to run that cause the game was still new and nobody except the betaers knew about Teleports. It was so much more fun exploring and learning about the game than the plain features and repetitive things they throw out.

I've enjoyed both. I remember being a newbie wood elf druid and getting a port to NK from Kelethin, then running all the way from there to Qeynos with my friend. We were both level 1, and when we'd nearly gotten there, we almost ran right into a lion and died. It was harrowing, but fun.

But I've also enjoyed growing in level and exploring the new places. The new dungeons are really fun, and they're something nice to do when everyone wants to. We couldn't last night with my guild group, so we got some 30s and went hunting up in DSP.

I just like the game in general. I like the changes, I miss some old things, but all in all I have to say that I'm very happy with how it is now. It's not like it was 3 years ago when I joined (I joined with Kunark, so I never had *the* original EQ), but I can't say it's exactly bad, either.

I had my most fun in the time before Kunark, during Kunark and then shortly into Velious. Then my friends started dropping off EQ and it just became boring. For me it was always about hunting and having fun with my friends and the RP with the various RP guilds that really declined with Velious.

The most fun I had--ever--in EQ was trying to get from Odin to Kelethin as a level 4 Necro. On about day three after release. When giant spiders were aggressive. When Highpass Hold was empty. . .and like three people knew the path through.

Most fun I had was running, as a completly green level 12, together with a completely green level 10 friend from Freeport to Qeynos. He... sorta... knew the way. (We got lost about a dozen times.)

It was one hell of an adventure, back then. When we finally got to qeynos we went to Fish's Bar and drank up all our coin in celebration.

I gained 30 alcohol tolerance!

EQ was a lot more fun when it was actually CHALLENGING.

I tried to get back into it a few months ago, and went from level 1 to level 37 in just a few days, grouping regularly. It was just plain sad.

Of course, most of that is to blame on the fact that you know the game well now. Sure, it was challenging at first. But that was because you didn't know what the hell you were doing.

Remember how Lv.20 was a big milestone? It was for me, the first couple of times I got it. But after that, meh...

There's much, much more to it than knowledge. The zones they added with insane exp modifiers, easy camps, etc... All factor in. A good trio could probably make L1-20 in a 2-3 days without PL... Whereas that was virtually impossible before.

n00b quests that offer better rewards (In terms of EXP and items) also factor into it.

Not like back when getting a full suit of bronze armor was great mid-level gear, and where bronze sold 2pp/ac (And banded sold for 1pp/ac).

Part of the challenge is noone understood the game all that well. Now everyone knows pretty much exactly what to do. Even if they opened a "Classic" server, the leveling treadmill would be overcome by the fact people know exactly where the XP is.

The way I see it, if they removed the XP fixes outside of the ones that were most needed ( such as the hybrid penalties which ended up effecting the entire group )

They should have left Hell Levels alone... they should have left 50-60 xp alone. I'm glad I went through every hell level in it's original form, just made me want to play more since dinging was an accomplishment.

Another issue is AAXP and Level XP pull the same numbers. AAXP needs to be a lot faster then Level XP, and PoP was sort of designed in my eyes to help with the horridly slow AA progress since the possible max now is 540+ AA. Smack down the XP mods in PoP zones and put an AA Mod on them. Make the leveling tread mill harder without really effecting AAs.

Oh yea.. and twinking is an big issue with making the game too easy. They had something going with recommended levels and required levels. I like the idea of recommended levels more then required, but still. But fixing that would require a revamp of every piece of equipment in the game.

I didn't join until not too long after velious. But I remember when I first entered nektulous forest as my DE Rogue. It was such a big place! I didn't leave "the newbie log" for like the first week. Whenever I did I got mauled by a bear The spiders in that game still scare me

I think the most fun I had though was going through the burning rapier quest. I did it starting at level 10 lol. I just knew I wanted that weapon! I read about it in the guide that was out then and for some reason decided I needed it. It took me weeks of playing and ignoring leveling to get that thing, but I finally achieved it! I was so proud of myself. Nothing ever compared to the challenge of that and the fun I had trying to find everything I needed to get it.

Of course, I was a little miffed when I found out it was only a subweapon needed on the long run to get the rogue epic item. For some reason the idea of trying to get another weapon quest didn't appeal to me. I never did get the epic weapon before quitting. And even if I did, I think I still would have felt I had more fun getting the rapier

Heh, I loved playing my mage some and enchatner a ton. I started sometime during the Velious expantion. I would go back, but the only class I would want to play at this point is a bard, and the last time I leveled one up to about 27ish, my left hand began to feel *really* damn sore. I'll just hold off for another game that equals the enjoyment I had with EQ.

I remember everyone going to East Commons because it was the best exp, but I always liked Nro better. (It wasn't because of that though, the first time I went to EC, I nearly got killed by black bears, and then after that, I went out at night, as a human warrior, deep into east commons and tried to fight a darkweed snake, first death in the game and I had no clue where my dead body was.)
Eventually at level 16, me and a few people that I grouped with since level 6 (Saryrn was a brand new server, Kunark just came out, I was a complete newbie, grouped with other complete newbies) headed out and decided we would kill the vile Dorn. Well, we had 2 level 16s, 2 level 15s, and 2 level 14s, and we went out and kicked Dorns ass. We thought it was so fun, that we did it again. And got wiped out by the thing that spawns sometimes when you kill dorn (Dark Elf Assassin I believe).
That was one of the last things I ever did in Nro, then I went to Oasis, where I spent most of my time on the bottom of a sand giant's boot.

My fondest EQ memories:

  • Scouring Kelethin for a half an hour looking for the kindly Druid who was handing out Gnoll Hide Lariats. Delay of 20?! OUTRAGEOUS! I kept that joker into my mid-20s. Also, anyone who knows who gave it to me gets a cookie.

  • Three words. Player run events.

  • Spending over an hour doing the Barnacle Breastplate quest for the sole reason that it looks cool (it really does, if you've never seen one).

  • Tailoring. I had this huge love for Tailoring (and later on, Fletching). Every time I started a Monk (they didn't live long), I took out giant spiders like they were going out of style so I could put together silk armour. I actually managed a full set of a raw silk on my Iksar, but I don't think he ever got past level 12 anyway.

  • Traveling all the way across Antonica to see the bazaar and buy banded armour. In fact, I think that was my absolute favorite night in EQ. An epic solo journey, lots of close calls, maxing my Percussion skill... That was so cool

I don't think EQ has really gotten any worse as a game, but none of us are doe-eyed newbies with dreams of digital adventure anymore. People just don't like the game that much anymore.

I think I got owned.
