Q: If I register my number on the National Do Not Call Registry, will it stop all telemarketing calls?
A: No. Placing your number on the National Do Not Call Registry will stop most, but not all, telemarketing calls. You may still receive calls from political organizations, charities, telephone surveyors or companies with which you have an existing business relationship.
The only people that DO telemarketing.
I let the answering machine pick it up first, and if it's someone I know I answer. Otherwise I assume telemarketer.
My favorite thing to do with said calls is this....
Tele-marketer : Is Soanso home?
Me : Yes one second please.
( 10 minutes elapse )
Me : Hold on he is coming.
Tele-marketer : Sir if this is a bad time I can call back.
Me : Nope he's on his way now.
( 5 minutes later )
Me : You still there ??? muhahahahaha !!!
( Slams receiver down and hang up the phone )

I wonder if they get in trouble for haning up, or if they would hang up.
That is a good idea to do anyways

When I lived in Rhode Island, I had to cancel my phone service because the telemarketers were so bad. They have this nifty device, legal in only a few states, that dials a bunch of numbers at once, and connects the telemarketer to the first person to answer. Everyone else gets dead air when they pick up the phone.
I was getting four or five calls a day where no one was on the line.
Funny thing was, the phone company agreed with me that if I called someone five times a day and hung up, I'd be comitting a crime, but it was perfectly okay for telemarketers to do it.
--Satan, quoted by John Milton
Can't we just get rid of it? There are so many countries in the world that seem to be doing just fine without one.
This was just a nationwide thing, and is a real shame that it got blocked for now.
Who wants to bet that they banded together when they realized that an assload of numbers that were signed up were on their regular call lists?

See, someone I know did this before...
Telemarketer: Hello, is Mrs. Blah there?
Them: Nope, sorry. They died. *hangs up*
About two weeks later, they got a sympathy basket from the company, including a letter that said "sorry for your loss."

"Predicitive Diallers" is what they are called.. (used to work in a Telemarketing Dept for a Telco).. the newer ones now will only dial if there is a "free" telemarketer waiting to receive the call..
(But wait!! Act now and receive a FREE TELEMARKETER!! Our operators are standing by for your call.....)

Delphi Aegis had this to say about Knight Rider:
There was a law (Or something?) that said if you told a telemarketer to put you on their own do not call list, then recorded it (And kept that record), then the same company called you within one year, you could get up to 500 bucks, or something. This was just a nationwide thing, and is a real shame that it got blocked for now.

Lawsuit was brought by the Direct Marketing Association on behalf of its members (read: Anyone who employs telemarketers)..
quote:
From a CNN newsreport:
In a statement Wednesday, the DMA acknowledged that millions of American do not want to receive telephone marketing calls. The group said it supports the idea of a list for consumers to express their preference not to be solicited by telephone, and pointed out that for years it has offered its own no-call system for consumers.
Anyone wanna lay odds that the real reason they're pissed is not that the FTC created a list, but to hide the fact that the DMA list doesn't really work (I know when I was telemarketing here we were often instructed to ignore "Do Not Call" notices on people's details.. including on a campaign calling into the US selling ADSL for Ameritech in/around Indianapolis..)
Also..
Best reaction I've seen to this ruling was here:
quote:
No story regarding Judge Lee West's decision to disregard the desires of 50 million Americans should be considered complete without the inclusion of Mr. West's complete name, address and a telephone number where he can be reached during dinner time.
I dare say, however, that Judge West is smart ebnough to have an unlisted number (which also means he avoids those pesky telemarketers too... watta co-inky-dink... )
Also, is there any point to having a cell number listed on the DNC list?
"Hello?"
"Hi, I'm with MCI Long Distance, and-"
"Do you know you're calling a cell phone?"

It's illegal to telemarket across cell phones, since using up someone's paid minutes to sell stuff to them is absurd.
