I have recently been took a learning disabilities test at my community collage, because all through out my life, Ive always had problems in school, I mean I barley passed high school, though even tests have shown that I was smart. Well, I had the test results back to day and I went over them with the councilor, and I do have a learning disability, and possibly, I also have ADD, though I would have to do more testing for that. While you might tell me sorry that I have it, Im actually glad that I have a learning disability, I'm actually glad that I have a learning disability, because it means that I am not a failure, and that it really isn't my fault.
To clarify that last statement, and give you an ideal what I mean, I have always dreaded my classes. I have been id deep depression about thinking of going to classes cause of the problems I had. I was even going to drop out of collage because I couldn't stand to fail anymore. I thought I was a complete failure for not even able to pass remedial English, among other classes. So the fact that it isn't that Im a failure, but because my brain has problems possessing information. Is an enormous relief.
But, to put icing on top of the cake. The test scores showed that, not only were some of my strengths were high, but they were off the chart. Yes, I repeat, some of my scores were off the chart. The councilor was shocked and surprised at how well I did. And my weaknesses? They are in the average range. The councilor said that my intelligence range from the test were probably in the top 6% of 21 year olds, I did that well. I almost broke down crying right then, all my childhood, Ive always been told that I was stupid or that I was dumb.
No, Really. Bite me.
WTF is the world coming to?
First, ADD is about 86.9% bullshit. Made up by teachers' unions and pharmaceutical companies. And the P-C Left.
Second, that's really nothing to be proud of. It means that, for the rest of your life, you'll have to work harder than others to achieve the same results. Not that, for the rest of your life, the world will give you special treatment and cater to your handicap.
It's a good thing, if true, that you've identified a handicap. What is it, though? Being bad at English is hardly a learning disability. It means you can learn to overcome your handicap.
Because, third, the real world, in which you'll find yourself after college, doesn't really care about grades, or test scores, or any of that other crap. It cares about results. If you have any ambition at all beyond sweeping floors or pumping gas, it means you've got to accept responsibility for your results, and do what you must to see they meet standards.
Armed with the test results, you should be able to do that. But it's not a promising start that the first thing you celebrate is the shifting of responsibility for your performance.
Good luck, dude, and sorry for the dose of reality. . .but better now than later, when you're trying vainly to figure out why no one will hire you.

To have gotten as far, and scored as well as you did, despite an untreated learning disability is impressive. Now that you know what you're dealing with, you can work around it and get the results people expect.
It may not get easier, but at least you're not going to be fighting against an unknown.

I'm being an ass, but you just said exactly the same thing I did?
Aptitude tests at that age mean just about diddly. At some point in one's life, it becomes time to do something instead of pointing to tests that "prove" one's potential. At some point, that potential becomes wasted from lack of use.
Sorry, but reality is a harsh place, and blowing sunshine up someone's ass may get you a second date, but you're not doing them any favors.

Don't identify a problem and be happy. Celebrate it when you overcome it. Being a legal imbecile is nothing to be proud of.

Yes. It's called tact and understanding. Your post was lacking in both.
Picture this: You go through life with only one hand. People tell you there's nothing wrong with you, and yell at you when you don't do things as fast or as good as someone with two hands. You do your best, and manage to keep up with others, but it's allways a struggle. People don't believe you when you tell them it's hard though, they just tell you that you're lazy.
Then, one day, a doctor comes by. He takes a look at you, and says "Hey, did you notice that you only have one hand?" And suddenly, people around you believe that you have a problem. They make plans to get you a replacement hand that, while not as good as a real one, will still make some things easier.
How can you not expect him to not be happy? He's not lazy, and he's not stupid. All the people that have told him so are wrong, and now he has someone backing him up with proof. He's been fighting an uphill battle all this time, and now he has a shot at a more level playing field.

I don't agree with the comment about ADD being 86% bullshit. I do think there are a lot of cases where kids gets falsely diagnosed as ADD but there are people that have it, including me. I don't expect people to cater to me just because I'm not as good at some things, but I do think it's real.

There's more, but that should be enough to start you thinking.

That has to be the silliest analogy I've heard in months, if not years. It's so silly, as a matter of fact, that it defies intelligent rebuttal; it's its own rebuttal.
--Satan, quoted by John Milton
All his life DoR had been classed as one of the last. He was essentially called a dipshit all these years because even though he tried, he didn't get the same grades as the lazy lucky ones. Well, you can imagine what a relief it is to find out that hey, I'm not an idiot like people have been saying all these years, I'm a really smart guy a lot of ways, I just kinda suck at a couple things.
that's what he's celebrating. He's celebrating that he's found WHY he has problems meeting the standards that are set forth, and now that he knows why he's having trouble, it will be easier to target his weaknesses and improve upon them specifically. He wants to succeed, he tries hard, and he's celebrating the fact that he now knows WHY he hasn't been.
Here's an analogy. Let's say that you take up golf. You watch all sorts of videos, play four times a week, get some lessons from a pro, and after three years, you're still getting whupped by people the first time they ever touch a club. Along comes a guy one day and says "wow, the reason you're having problems isn't that you just are naturally bad, but rather that your legs are too close together" and you widen your stance, and after a lot of practice, you get better, and start beating veterans.
wouldn't you be happy to learn that it wasn't a natural deficiency, but rather something else that made you suffer all those years?
No, Really. Bite me.

It was, I admit, hard to come up with a good analogy. I'm sorry that I couldn't come up with one capable of bridging the gap in your understanding.
They said they'd never seen anything like it. I still have trouble with actually doing math problems, but I don't let that stop me from trying. I figure sooner or later I'll get better at it. I mean, obviously I understand math, so I just have to figure out what's stopping me from transfering that onto paper.
I used to be ashamed of this, and I'm still not proud of it...but I don't need a test to tell me what I can and can't do. So writing math out is hard for me...maybe that's just who I am.
It just seemed to apply. [ 09-13-2003: Message edited by: Suddar ]

Because, third, the real world, in which you'll find yourself after college, doesn't really care about grades, or test scores, or any of that other crap.
That's a relief. My grades were awful.
Secondly, I never said i had ADD, though im sure i have it, im going to go get tested for it. I know quite a few people with ADD and it isn't bullshit. Trust me. The problems with scientists takes studys and other experiments is that they arn't always right. They can't test everyone. Heres some news for you, people differ, no two (uh oh, im female) people are the same.
Next, I'm 21 and am just now learnign what a verb is. Yes thats right, im learning how to do beginnign grammar. In a competitive world where being able to right well and spell well means the differense between getting a job and not, or even getting out of collage, not being able to is a handicapp.
Basicly, what im trying to say is, YOu have no fucking ideal what my life is like, what i have to go through, try steping into my shoes and see how my life is. No? Then shut the fuck up, ass-clown.
Btw, iu think i disticly posted that this is about my personal life and if you don't like it, you can leave.

You're the one that thinks it's a good thing to be a proven idiot and you say he's got false ideas about the world?
Ah, to live your life...
I only mention it because it seems you've given up trying to be coherent in this thread.

Haha I was almost on your side too.
But really, just work on it. Don't use it as an excuse. All that learning disability means is that you learn differently, usually in a way that is much harder to do than the "norm."
It's not good to use it as an excuse. And it's not good to sit here and tell us you're going to try harder, when you should be out trying harder. [ 09-14-2003: Message edited by: Suddar ]

Oh wait you have ADD
And anyways, last time, I'm not celebrating that I have a handicap, but that I found out before my life is tottaly ruined by it. Shrugs, I have a LD, I'm going to have it for the rest of my life. There's nothing I can change about that. [ 09-14-2003: Message edited by: Death of Rats ]
