That was an interesting read. I hope they win the right to get married.
Me, too.
I'm happy for them and everything. One of my friend's dad is gay -- so he lives with his "two dads" as he playfully calls it. They've been trying to get married for a few years now. I think that's really great. It was rough on my friend growing up dealing with all the kids teasing him about his dad being gay and all, but fortunately maturity and understanding got the best of most people, and most just learned to respect and accept it, even if they didn't approve of it.
I just have one question -- anti-sodomy laws? wtf is that, anyways? I didn't know sodomy was a crime. [ 08-31-2003: Message edited by: Emily ]

Various sexual practices are illegal in some U.S. states, the federal supreme court recently struck Texas' version of those down iirc.

wtf are they gonna do? Come busting down your house if they find you and your lover are having butt-sex? Give me a break! What people do behind closed doors should be their own damn business!

Stupid shit that might have had a slight reason a hundred years ago that no one practially knows exists anymore.
On a side note, I hope that they can get married. I think it's still fucked up that people can't do what they want to do when it's not going to hurt someone else or themselves. Our country was founded on the freedom of beliefs and yet we still opress beliefs different than what's mainstream.

Exactly.
Though the thought of policemen dragging two naked guys into the station while they scream "I'LL STICK MY COCK WHEREVER I DAMN WELL PLEASE!!" is just too silly to ignore.

Thats a good law. I dont want to walk in someones saliva just cause they're fucking disgusting.

Me, too. It would set legal precedent. I want to marry Mikasi someday.

Actually happened, a year or so ago, that's how the law in texas got struck down.
quote:
Bummey the Fool had this to say about Reading Rainbow:
If you can find someone you love and want to be with forever, why should it matter if they're the same sex as you? Some people you just can't reach.
This argument, in my opinion at least, destroys any possible anti-gay argument. I mean, if two people love each other and happen to be the same sex, how is it anyone else's business to question them? The practice of consentual homosexuality does not hurt anyone. There should never anything wrong with two people loving each other.

Emily probably says this to all the girls:

Wait until you find out oral sex is illegal in some states.

Question: If a man and woman get married in Canada, is the marrage considered valid in the US? If yes, then it might be interesting if someone had a same-sex marrage in Canada, then came to the US and simply claimed the rights. When denied, they could then sue for their rights. Same basic idea, but it has additional weight behind it because of Canada's involvement.

No, currently it's not considered valid in the states, thank god.
They simply want to get married for the tax breaks, they even said so in the article. If it was at all about love, it'd be enough for them to have it done in Canada and call it good.

Why dont they just marry a pair of lesbians and all 4 live together? Less hassle, more taxbreaks.
Uhoh. I sense Fox stealing this plan and turning it into a reality TV series. [ 09-01-2003: Message edited by: Skaw ]

Sooo...why don't a man and woman do the same thing, if it's all about love? I mean, if it's about love, then a man and woman shouldn't care about tax breaks, either. When I ask my girlfriend to marry me, I'll make sure we tie the knot in Canada. Because it's all about the love, you see.

They've already had the ceremony for love.
They want the governmental benefits to being married as well.

It's not just tax breaks. It's also the rights that normally go to a married couple, such as being on each other's insurance, and being the one to make decisions if the other is ever gravely injured or on life support.

He has some very intresting points.
Let's see.
A bunch of glittering generalities and appeals to tradition.
Some authoritarian bullshit about indoctrinating young people.
An unrelated rant about feminism.
And, of course, the key argument: "OHNOSE MARRIAGE WIL B CHAnGED 4EVER!!!1" As if that were a bad thing. Oh and, the ol' "THE GAYS GO AGAINST NATURE#$^@#$" bullshit.
So, we have arguments that A) inconsequential, B) fallacious, or C) downright idiotic. Nope, not one convincing argument why gay people shouldn't be allowed to marry each other.
