It's pretty bad when something normal like that happens and the news people have to include something about it not being related to terrorism.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A New York State official said the Niagara Mohawk power grid overloaded on Thursday, causing a massive power outage, CNN reported, and New York Major Michael Bloomberg said it was likely a natural occurrence.
"It may be well into the evening before power comes back on," Bloomberg told the U.S. cable television network. He said smoke from a Consolidated Edison Inc. plant in the city was due to the plant's automatic shutdown, not to a fire, as had been reported.

He said, "I can tell you 100 percent sure that there is no evidence as of this moment whatsoever of any terrorism."

A massive power outage swept across swaths of the eastern United States and Canada on Thursday, leaving sections of New York, Detroit, Cleveland and Toronto without electricity, witnesses said.

It was not immediately clear whether the Niagara Mohawk problem caused the wider outage.

It wasn't hackers, but if it was, it seems like it would be one hell of a hacking stunt.

It would also be a death trap, though. No one in his right mind would piss off all of NYC.

Actually, it ws quite understandable. I just got power back here in Jersey about twenty minutes ago after a couple hours of downtime of downtime. When the original outage happened the power flickered on/off rapidly here for five minutes. When it seemed stable went to the TV and all the cable stations were down, as well as internet access. Went to my cell phone and all the lines were busy. Shortly after my power went out entirely. Of course, I then went to my radio and battery powered TV to find out what happened.

Had the power not flickered on/off I would have thought it could have been another "attack" personally. The loss of the TV stations and my cell phone emulated the exact same thing of 9/11, and the loss of power definitely didn't help. I'm sure for those who just had their power dissapear their first thoughts was terrorist attack. Luckily talk of that was very quickly put down. While we can make fun of it now it was definitely a worry for people initially.

I still feel bad for those who got stuck in elevators and on subway cars. A number of people are still stuck in them actually. For them its really gotta suck.

They claimed on TV about 45 minutes ago that the subway systems were as of now 100% evacuated.

Who knows if that's totally true.

I wasn't making fun of anyone. But I do think it's pretty bad that before September 11th, this would have been something normal, and people would be looking for a logical, technologically related answer to it. I find it upsetting that the first reaction is some sort of terrorist attack when things like this happen now.

Actually, its not something that could be called "normal". Every summer there's power outages in parts of NYC. This, on the other hand, is the largest power outtage in the northeast since the 60s. There were no major initial indications of the cause, like a fire, to explain the power outage.

While reporters are far too quick to call terrorist normally, you can't disagree that there's some reason behind the initial thoughts. For those who live in the NYC area its no surprise to me that they'd be worried after 9/11.

My point is that ever since we had a terrorist attack, it's the first thing on someone's mind. And before 9/11 other possibilities would have come up first, most likely something related to technology and malfunctions. And I think it's a disturbing trend to see that terrorism even has to be mentioned before mechanics is ruled out. As someone pointed out after Demos' post, either in this thread or the other, paranoia doesn't help anything.

I would be hard as hell to do anyway. Most Utility's keep their actual control systems tighter than a duck's ass, plus the control systems are usually isolated from the outside at large. I.E. My dad's work does use computerized valves and regulators, but the control systems are not connect to any other network at the company and have tight security on them.

I was on the phone, explaining to some kid my sister moved out, when suddenly the phone cuts out and the power blinks. I walk into the livingroom and say "Hey, why would the phone cut out because the power blinks?"

"Whuur.... whur... whr"

"Ah, not a blink then..."

That was really very, very irritating. One of my friends was wandering around Brooklyn last we checked, lost. We are hoping he found a friendly place to stay the night eventually.

Thankfully my house has a generator, so we just invited all my gaming friends over and told them to bring all the gas they could find, and had a big party.

Guess it's time for the blackout stories.

My apartment tower in Ottawa first got power back around 1300 today (Friday). It was up for about 3 hours, and then they shut us donw again. As of 1830 or so we got powered up again but the radio's been blaring about expecting brownouts for the next day or two until the generators are all started up again.

BTW, it is no fun driving home, one eye on traffic, one eye on the gas guage when you're below 1/4 tank of gas. Luckily it only took me 30-40 minutes to drive home (normally takes 20minutes) since I tend to go against traffic most of the way. Now to find a gas station that's open and can take plastic....

Nah, the blackout itself had a sort of novelty to it... the current irritating, hour-long and possibly computer-destroying rolling blackouts, however, aren't. They're hot, they bug me, and I ran out of reading material.

Sigh.
