For reference, in this scene, they're looking at the side of a haunted pirate ghost ship.

Er, I think that's a hexagram, not a Star of David. It's supposed to be used in a variety of magic. Somebody'll eventually post a link to a site explaining it more fully, but a hexagram and its more infamous cousin the pentagram, both have a circle around it, a Star of David doesn't.

They commonly use both of those symbols in anime to denote magic, usually evil.

...It's a Star of David... It's sort of implied it should be a pentagram.

No fucking shit. Boo-hoo.

I was under the broad understanding that circles denote a barrier or protection.

They say later on that it was a Crest of Protection for the ship's voyages.

They come bearing circumcisions, t-e-h sachs disease, and are the forerunners to the christian and moslem pirates.

Least they aren't Jehovah's Witnesses.

Actully you are a bit wrong there, The Star of David, and a hexagram are the same things. Here is the site, http://www.symbols.com/encyclopedia/27/2722.html

Though you have a point about Anime using such symbols to mean things they don't, like I have seen in alot of recent imports they seem to use german words to name alot of things now.

According to The History of Magic and the Occult by Kurt Seligmann, copyright 1948, that is a magic circle, used primarily in the summoning of diabolic powers. The Star of David symbol was a widely used device of faith and power, and was thought to ward of evil spirits in the same way a cross wards off vampires.

Dont let the fact there is a star of david in the middle confuse or mislead you. Magicians who used this warding device were only occassionally Jews, and often were educated white western men who drew from thousands of years of cabbalistic knowledge in diabolic rites with the goal of summoning and controlling demons to work for them and to aid them in gaining wealth and power.
