I beat all my friends and some people, until the maniacs came up. She's my perfect character.
Now I so need to get it here to hone my skillz =(

I didn't play the first one. If someone's bored, give us SC noobs an overview of each character's strengths and weaknesses.
Right off the top of my head...
Nightmare:
Horrific power and range; arguably the best character in the game. Some local tourneys even outlaw him and Xianghua. Speaking of which...
Xianghua:
Very quick, lots of mix-ups, few weaknesses. Popularly accepted as overpowered.
Mitsurugi (woot!):
Well balanced character, good for beginners. Has a predeliction for attacking opponents on the ground.
Kilik:
Phenomenal range, moderate power and speed. An experience Kilik player can keep up a barrage of attacks which will leave the opponent helpless (unless he can pull off a guard impact).
Raphael:
Very quick and mobile, with lots of little tricks and mix-ups. However, he has low power, and his attacks are agonizingly linear, making it easy to flank him.
Taki:
A fan favorite, the beautiful ninja is highly agile, but low in the power department.
Astaroth:
Perhaps the biggest brusier in the game. Astaroth has good range and 8,972,545 different throws, but is pretty sluggish and can be outmanuevered if the player is careless.
Voldo:
Extremely difficult but rewarding to play, Voldo can smoothly shift from stance to stance while peppering the opponent with attacks from all heights.
Ivy:
The platinum bombshell wields the weirdest weapon in the game: a sword which can extend into a metal whip. Because of this, she is equally adept at attacking at a range or in close quarters, but is not especially good at either. She also has one hell of an attitude. "Is that painful?"
Incidentally, Harold "Kageh" Hess played Ivy to a first place finish at the nationals this past winter; no one believed an Ivy player would even make it to the finals
I haven't played the other characters enough to really get a feel for them.
I was going to make a big long post about this but I will just refer you to the rankings project. While it dosn't tell you much about the character it is fairly spot on about what characters stand a chance against who.
Yea, chevy is a bastard.
