I was going to install the game, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri onto my computer and I was wondering other people's opinion on the game.

It didn't seem too popular when I got it and nobody I knew played it, so if you have, please state your opinions on the game. I personally love it and was addicted for a long time.

It's great. I bought it the day it was released.

I made love to it long time.

Liked it.

Definately surpassed now in my opinion by Civ3, which takes many of the strengths of AC and blended em into the Civ tradition.

One thing though that still sets AC apart a bit from many games is in it's genre is having a running storyline going while playing an empire building game.

To tell you the truth, I like Civ3 a lot more than AC. It just has more of a historical backround to follow, makes it more interesting.

That game took about 2 months of my life away. The expansion makes the game insanely difficult because you cant just ge the vote to win till you nuke the aliens, which are much more annoying than all of the humans combined.

I had Alpha Centauri AND the expansion "Alien Crossfire".

Loved that game. Wasn't like Civ II, where you really had to dedicate yourself overly-much. Could just buzz through an afternoon having fun with AC.

My only beef was that the first game, University was the way to kick ass. No one could keep up. With the expansion, the available factions were more balanced, but still somewhat...annoying (like the Datajacks...practically the only way they could keep up in tech was by stealing it from other people with their crappy infiltration skills)

Yang and Morgan could keep up with the University quite well if played well. The University is best if you go for a 'live and let live' approach, you have to play the factions in a way their strengths are put to use.

Life... is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that nobody ever asks for. Unreturnable, because all you get back is another box of chocolates. You're stuck with this undefinable whipped-mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down when there's nothing else left to eat. Sure, once in a while, there's a peanut butter cup, or an English toffee. But they're gone too fast, the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits, filled with hardened jelly and teeth-crunching nuts, and if you're desperate enough to eat those, all you've got left is a... is an empty box... filled with useless, brown paper wrappers.

I just never share tech with anyone. That usually eventually goads someone into attacking me, while at the same time having bought me enough time to research like mad, get my defenses and weapon/defense systems up, and then I start a march of conquest, completely wiping out the faction that got pissy with me, then I lay in wait for the next foolhardy idiot.

I could come close with Morgan...he's the wheeler-dealer extraordinaire. But paying out the yin-yang to keep up with the tech curve stings after a while.

Never managed to get Yang and the Hive to work out, and lord knows I tried. I just don't have the mindset to make them work.

Spartans can last a while, but eventually they tend to scare the other factions no matter how you play them and the others gang up and splatter you.

The Hippies fall fast...I have never played through and had them be formidable. They accelerate early on, but by the time you get buggies with any real weapons, the Hippies get outmaneuvered. Their only hope is if they're in some isolated corner of a huge planet and have a chance to build up.

UN? Yeah. Get real.

Religious bumpkins? Pfft. they go down faster than the UN.

The religious bumpkins? Yeah they always try to encroach on my turf and steal my resources. Then they get pissy when I build cities to take them back.

Then the hurting time starts, and science, as it was always destined to do, defeats religion.

How you get the hippies to work out is beyond me, Dr P

Mindworms can be quite the weapon with all those +planet boni, also they aren't exactly poor with all that +effic.

On a related note, does anyone know where one could get a CD of alien crossfire or the planetary pack that is not ebay? I don't have my CD any more and would like to play that game again.

Hm ok so I called all my usual retailers and it seems whoever Firaxis publisher was is only selling vanilla AC currently(at the price of a torn sock), the last time the expansion was shipped was as part of the 'planetary pack' which has been discontinued over a year ago. Does this make the expansion abandonware?

1.) I always played as the hippies, don't kno why but I rocked with them.

2.) If I had a store like that around here Modrakien, they would be out of games due to my obsession with old games.

For global domination, I play as the Gaians. Three words: Locusts of Chiron.
For scientific domination, I play as the University.

There really is no other true way of winning other than nuking the hell out of your opponents or beating them to the final science theory.
