Am I the only one who finds this show hilarious?

The guy's info is accurate, but... hehe... he doesnt strike me as an ex-marine. He even introduces himself as Mr. *whatever his name is* rather than with a rank.

"Age by age have men stood up and said to the world, 'From what has come before me, I was forged, but I am new and greater than my forebears.' And so each man walks the world in ruin, abandoned and untried. Less than the whole of his being"

I love the show. Not sure on his status as a marine. But I think they are playing off the fact that he was always type cast as a DI or other hardass in the service. If I remember correctly he is the DI from Full Metal Jacket.

He was the DI from Full Metal Jacket. He was an actual DI in the Marine Corps.

I believe he was an actual lower level Sergeant while he was active, but he was made an honorary Chief Master Sergeant or whatever the Marine equivalent rank is.

Quoted from here.

Ronald Ermey's real life USMC career is not at all on the same level as his famous character Gunnery Sergeant Hartman. In real life, Ermey was a Staff Sergeant and, although a Vietnam veteran, was never awarded the Purple Heart or a combat decoration (Bronze Star, Silver Star, etc).

R. Lee, Jesse James, and Homer Simpson are the last quality left on TV

R. Lee Ermy, the only guy that can make the phrase "I'm gonna rip off yer head and shit down yer neck!" be insanely humerous.

Jesse James, the only wanker that gets to use a 30mm chain gun to destroy a failed car experiment.

Homer Simpson, well.... what can be said about Homer but "D'Oh!"?

If you want to catch some of R. Lee's really early work, like his first movie role, I think, look for an older film called "The Boys in Company C". R. Lee plays, what else, a drill instructor. His character, Sgt Loyce, is still a hard-ass, but unlike GySgt Hartman, he actually cares about the recruits he's training, because he knows most of them are going Vietnam and some of them are going to die there.

It's not really a big movie and may be hard to find. It shows up on cable once in a while. There's no real big stars in it and it's an old enough movie (1979 or 80) that it was still uncomfortably too soon after Vietnam for a lot of people to want to go watch it in the theater.

I'm noticed that the majority of roles R Lee plays in, he dies. Full Metal Jacket, Omega Project 2, etc.

But yeah, I watch mail call religously

Yep.

I started flipping through the cable boxes' schedule, and I was overjoyed when Mail Call kept coming up.
