I see a lot of people going around today being proud about labelling themselves "otakus", which is a japanese term that metaphorically describes somebody who has an obsession, or hobby. What most people seem to fail to realize is that "otaku" is meant, most usually, in a derogatory fashion.
How many people feel alienated because of the way they look? Perhaps they are overweight? In japan, it's very worse. Because it is a country based on confucian values, CONFORMITY IS PRIZED AND ENCOURAGED. The Japanese are plagued by racism as well, it's not just a U.S. thing. Thje oppression of the Ainu, the horrible Japanese/korean relations, things are not happy in the land of the rising sun.
Japan may like to be seen as more european than asian, but the common rejection of japan by western civilization has breeded a bitter attitude that takes on the idea of showing by example that they are as good as western civilization (since so many countries fail to consider their importance.) This gives to a lot more than a little tension quite often.
Don't get me wrong, Japan is a wonderful place. But nobody should delude themselves into thinking that it is some fanboys paradise. [ 06-19-2003: Message edited by: DS ]
It's not even about the anime. It's about the country, It's pretty, and there would be so much to do.
And I know about Otaku being derogatory, but I'm a beleiver in how some things can have different meanings in different places. A fag is a cigarette in England, for example. Otaku isn't generally bad here. [ 06-19-2003: Message edited by: OtakuPenguin ]

Only like four people in my Japanese class want to go to Japan, and they already have. I'm not sure if Tatsukaze wants to go that badly or not.
Maybe it's just that I'm nervous about attempting to make use of my limited grasp of the language and failing miserably. And my fear of branching out and doing new things.
Eh.
edit: Ferret, have fun. All I was saying is that I don't think I would enjoy the trip. =/ [ 06-19-2003: Message edited by: Kegwen ]
