To get past the room with the pedastal, take the clock weights from the broken clock, go into the room where there is a picture of a chess knight on the wall after crawling back through the shaft. Set the weights on the string at the top of the machine, take the piece. Put the piece on the pedastal, and you'll get a sliding game based on the knight's moving rules.
