Until you slip up and kill yourself or go into cardiac arrest

HINT: Probably about a month, maybe a year if you're really lucky

The official record for going without sleep was set by Randy Gardner in 1965. He stayed awake for 265 hours and 12 minutes.

Off the books, though, several people have supposedly gone for years without sleep due to medical conditions.

Don't those people go insane and eventually die?

some people are able to go through a full set of sleep cycles in about an hour after recieving massive brain trauma.

for them it's as if they got 8 hrs of sleep, but it only take an hour. this is a pretty cool thing seeing as you then have a full 23 hours of wakeful "working" time but like i said, useually only occurs after massive brain trauma.

i know you can go into spasms and such, but i'm not sure about dieing.... a problem is that sleep helps keep you sane... literally. without sleep, you will start losing it. Some sleep, even a minimal amount, is a lot different than no sleep at all, at least physically. As for your mental health, you should really start trying to get some REM sleep or you will start going loony (meaning you need.. three hours uninterrupted sleep or so i believe).

The effects of sleep depravation are entirely psychological, and sometimes psychosomatic. There are no documented health risks directly attributed to sleep deravation.

It's really not clearly understood why people need to sleep. Interestingly, though, sleep disorders are common among both psychotics and exceptionally intelligent people.
