Yes, the thread locking feature will get abused. Nearly every new feature gets abused. But that'll calm down after a while, and it'll become just another nifty little button that's there when you need it.

Sometimes your thread that started innocently enough turns into a flame war you don't care for and don't want to be associated with. So you ask for it to be closed. No harm done.
