Since it's a Nintendo product, I've got to complain about it.
First off what I said would be it's problem, is. It's gone back to the thumb-straining oblong design of the original "grey slab" gameboy, only this time you have shoulder buttons you need to hit from time to time, too, which makes it even more awkward to play for long periods of time. The old Gameboy Advance design with a backlight and lithium battery would have been vastly preferable.
Another thing that annoyed me is that there's no headphone jack and I was forced to use the dinky tinny speakers built into the thing. However, this point was made moot by the fact that the music and sound effects had apparently not changed at all from the original gameboy.
On the upside, the games are pretty fun, and it's nicely portable, and the battery lasts forever. [ 03-23-2003: Message edited by: Maradon XP ]

liquidsub had this to say about John Romero:
What's the point of the GB SP? It's barely different and was a waste of time to make.
The same reason most any luxury item is mass produced.
Money.
The new features are just a reason to get peopel to buy it. [ 03-23-2003: Message edited by: Tegadil ]

It's got a backlight and lithium battery and doesn't cost that much more. [ 03-23-2003: Message edited by: Maradon XP ]
I imagine one thing that may have pushed Nintendo over the edge to put in a sidelight (It's not a backlight, already! The manual calls it a side light, so that's what I'm calling it!) was not people buying Afterburners; but rather people buying Afterburners, trying to install them, and then calling Nintendo for warranty support.
As for the headphone jack... yeah, having to buy an adapter for headphones is a pain, but sheesh... there's not ROOM inside the thing for a headphone jack, based on the internal pics I've seen here.

There was much rejoicing when Niklas said this:

Not unless taking up slack means something in some weird European slang
