I hadn't even heard of MOAB before a saw references to it in one of SA's Photoshop Phridays like last week...

edit: and I still don't know anything about it besides that it supposedly make big boom

20,000 pound bomb which delights in going 'boom'.

For reference, the 'Daisy Cutter', second largest bomb (apparently) is 15,000 pounds. We could use that to wipe out entire areas of forest in Vietnam for landing zones.

I like watching big explosions.

The bigger the better, assuming I'm safe while watching it.

That's why I want to see what happens when they set off that MOAB bomb

MOAB doesn't stand for Mother of All Bombs, that's just a nickname, by the way, a joke...

I completely forgot what it really stands for, just read it the other day though.

It a bigger better Dasiy Cutter--In the beginning of "Outbreak" they show a dasiy cutter being dropped out of a c-130--. It aboutr 9.5 tons of explosives bigger than a Dasiy cutter, plus unlike the Cutter, it is made to be able to drop from bombers, like the B-52, rather than kicked out of the back of a C-130.

The bomb it's self is a fuel-air bomb. As the bomb drops it sprays out 9 tons or so of a and explosive slurry, as this slurry spreads through the air it mixes with the air, then a smaller explosive charge goes off and ignites the Mixture of fueal and air causeing a Massive explosion. While they may be bigger bombs out there, the only other bombs that do cause the same types of damage and effects are Thermonuclear wepons.

---O yeah to give you an idea how Massive, Massive is, my brother heard it go off when they tested it in Florida...He lives in Alabama

MOAB is a gas vapor bomb, spreads out a fine mist that is ignited.

Hella big boom.

Yes, but there's the nasty little side effect of radiation with nukes. Not necessarily a bad thing if pure, unmitigated death is what you're going for, but if you'd actually like to occupy the land afterwards, you're better off with a conventional bomb.

Though when we're able to achieve clean fusion...

You know last time I check, a Fusion bomb would still have the nasty side effect of radiation, Seeing as any Nuclear reaction gives off energy across the board, fusion is considered clean for power cause the byproducts are not radioactive, or at least not so much so as to those of a fission reaction.

And Karnaj is right, nothing made so far come close to the shear output of a nuke. Even in a small nuke, your are guaranteed a firestorm from a air or ground level detonation--a real nifty effect were the air it self comes so super heated anything that can burn will, or melt. As far as I know of, the only time this was accomplished out side of a nuke was the fire bombing of Dresden during WW2, were the Alllies poured in insane amounts of ordinance into the city of Dresden, if you want to get a good accounting of it read Slaughterhouse 5.... However nukes do not give much tactical use as conventional weapons do, They are mostly strategic weapons.

Fusion alone is not a viable weapon. Fusion bombs are actually four-stage HE-fission-fusion-fission bombs. The HE initiates a fission reaction which in turn generates a fusion reaction, the force of which is directed to the final stage of fissile material, which is compressed with such great efficiency that you get Tsar-Bomba-level potential yields.

Wouldn't the radiation of a nuke spread to other places through wind, or rain, or something. Places we probably don't want to be radiated?

It depends on the type of Detonation. Most nukes are Air Detonations, they Go off above the target and make use of the insane amounts of heat generated to cause the destructive force. The Air burst is the cleanest cause it is basically irritating a small area of the ground under were is goes off, and the air around it, which isn't as big of a deal cause it spreads out thin--plus if you look at it, the atmosphere is constantly absorbing stellar radiation, so whats a little more? That and the Radioactive air is Consequently hot air so it will rise up away from the ground, might take a long time for it to makes it's way down again.

The other two types are ground level and below ground level. They are far dirtier than air cause they will kick up a large cloud of radioactive dust and fallout. The dust will fall from the sky either from gravity or in rainwater, and accumulate in larger quantities, enough to be dangerous, and be introduced into ecosystems/food chains quicker cause of this/
