I'm thinking about getting a good digital camera. I have it slimmed down to either the Cannon EOS 10D or the Nikon D100. I've found the Nikon for $1304 and the Cannon for $1490. I was wondering if anyone had experience with either of the brands and recomendations from that experience.

I've heard Canon's low-/mid-class are better performers than their high-end series (in terms of bang for buck). Nikon, though, I'm not sure...I don't know their reputation in the digital camera world too well.

I gotta say that the 10D is the winner here, unless you've already got a variety of nikon lenses you're going to be using. I just prefer the canon prime lenses to the top of the line nikon stuff...

I heard that the cheaper ones are actually better. I also heard that Cannon makes the best cameras. And I also heard that digital cameras break easily and the batteries don't last long, so if you hear about fragile cameras with low battery life span, don't let that bother you cause its the same for all cameras. I say stick with the Cannon.

My Canon has a battery life of a month or two or so on a set of rechargables.

Not too fragile either. Doesn't like rain, obviously.

So the general agreement is that Cannon is a better deal? Then what lense should I go with? I can only fit one lower end lense into the purchase so what mm rating lense should I go with?

well, if you can only afford a low level canon lens, then i'd say to go with a 24-70 or 28-105 with as big of an aperture as you can afford. But the canon is only goinf to outperform the nikon if you spend the cash for some decent lenses at some point.

If you're not willing to sink another $500-700 into lenses down the road, you might be better off getting the nikon and a good lens, than the canon and a mediocre lens.

Typically, you want to spend %50 - %100+ of the price of your camera body on lenses for it, on order to get good results.

However, my suggestion would be to wait ond get a good lens, instead of getting a great body and a crappy lens right now.

And remember, since your CMOS is smaller than a standard 35mm film frame, your effective lens length will be longer.

so a 24-70 will act the same as a 38.5-112 lens on a 35mm camera.
