Okay, I've been poking around Viewsonic's website, looking for a good deal on a monitor.

I have seen the terms aperture grille and shadow mask, and I'm fairly clear on aperture grille, but a little fuzzy on shadow mask.

Also, their E series monitors do not indicate either one. What is a monitor if it's not aperture grille or shadow mask?

I found one I rather like. The G90fb, 19", shadow mask, and the cheapest I found is $240. Looking around at the 17 inches, it appears with shipping that for the 1600x1200 max res monitor I want to get, I'll be spending near this price anyway. So I thought I might go ahead and go 19".

So any monitor information is appreciated. I want to make a good choice.

Aperture Grill - CRT construction employing vertical strips of phosphor separated by a grid of tiny metal wires. Light emitted from the electron gun passes through this grid of metal strings and is filtered and focused onto the back of the CRT, exciting phosphors that produce the on-screen image.

Shadow Mask - CRT construction that uses a metal mask of tiny holes (instead of the wire grid of a Aperture Grille) to shield and direct the electron beams from the electron gun onto the phosphor dots on the back face of the CRT tube. Shadow mask is the prevailing technology for detail-intensive, CAD/CAM, precision graphics, and text-intensive applications.

Aside from those, you also have LCD, which uses Thin Film Transfer (TFT), but I don't think you're asking about that, so I'll not go into it.

Were you just asking what those two things were or looking for something else?

I personally prefer Sony and Hitachi monitors, though Viewsonic is up there too.

Edit: Typoes!

Sony's a bit out of my price range even for a 17" unfortunately. And if I can get a 19" Viewsonic for less than a 17", I'd honestly rather do that. The larger screen will help when I run two EQw.

I was unsure what exactly shadow mask involved. I have heard mention of the two lines in aperture grille and wondered if it's as annoying as it sounds and shadow mask is better, or if it's bearable.

Also, which is better for gaming? That's the main use I'll have for the desktop.

Adam has one and he's seen my current monitor, so if he gives me the opinion Viewsonic is good, then I'll go with it. He knows what I'm dealing with now and he told me I'd be quite happy going with Viewsonic.

Plus it's easier on my budget. I could probably have swung for a Sony, IF they hadn't fucked us over here and decided they weren't giving us our March bonus.

Heh, this probably will not help you much but the best way to compare is side by side. Hit up a CompUSA or a Best Buy and look at the different brands to see what you like.

I know some people that swear a flat screen Trinitron is the only way to go where others would rather have a cheaper 21" than the high priced 17" Trinitron.

/shrug

I personaly hit up Tom's Hardware as a decent source of all kinds of computer info.
http://www4.tomshardware.com/display/index.html

That page has comparisons of several differing kinds of monitors. Flatscreens, regular monitors, 15's, 17's, 19's, etc...

Good luck!

p.s. My personal opinion... look for the stats you want (monitor size, max resolution, dot pitch, etc...) and to heck with brand name. I have Sony products that turned out to be lemons (cam-corder) and no name products (GBX monitor) that turned out to be good stuff.

A Viewsonic with Shadow Mask would be good for gaming as the high poly counts would be crisper than if on an Aperture Grille.

But you have me on ignore and probably haven't seen a word I've said in this thread

I have to say I'm pretty happy with my Viewsonic. I haven't had any problems with my monitor ever. Last one was getting dim and fading fast, and for comparably little money I got this replacement, that has seen me through two computers at this point. I don't know how to do a point by point comparison for monitors, otherwise I would. Viewsonics, though, are very solid monitors.

I got a Samsung monitor, true to my ethos of buying the cheap stuff wisely.

A side by side comparison with my smaller Sony monitor yields no conclusive disparity.

However it did take a bit of elbow grease to keep the fucking thing from quivering at higher resolutions.

well, your best bet is...

Buy USED!

you can get a top quality Sun, IBM, SONY, or mitsubishi 19" perfectly flat monitor for $150, or you can get a top notch 21" for $225-$300.

These monitors are all A+ uality, meaning in perfect working condition, with none/extremely minor cosmetic damage (slight scratch). They're units that have finished a lease term, and now they're being sold. Monitors that would retail for $500 going for half that...

head over to http://www.merkortech.com and peruse the A+ monitors (or even B grade, if you need even more savings).

Personally, i'd go with either:
19" SONY trinitron Dell branded CRT. 1600 x 1200 @ 85hz. $155.
or
21" SONY trinitron SUN branded CRT. 1600 x 1200 @75hz. $219
or
21" SONY triniron DELL branded CRT. 1800 x 1440 @ 75hz. Dual input capable. $285

This is a reputable firm (i know SEVERAL people that have purchased through them, all were very satisfied by goods and service.)

and check resellerratings.com: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller3322.html
that's almost newegg quality rating: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller2121.html

That's what I was thinking, and everything I've read said shadow mask is very good for gaming. Since everything in the system is being aimed toward a gaming machine, it's something I think I want.

I saw all your posts. I'll click the button if it's a non-inflammatory thread like this one.
