Ok, I have to be the only one in the world with this problem, cause I have found nothing on the net about it.

I have a Sceptre 21" CRT monitor, pretty old, about 1 and a half years.

Now what's been happening is, is that whenever I go into a low resolution, right now it's 1152x864, my monitor totally flips out. It displays the picture in all these moving zigzags, and my monitor makes this really high pitched tone. It seems like it's deteriorating, because it didn't use to do this at all. Also, it used to only do this at 640x480 or under.

When i'm in 1152x864, sometimes it fixes itself and the zigzags go away. but the lower the resolution, the more time it takes to fix itself...

Anything over 1152x864 does not have any zigzags at all.

Also, I know this is a problem with my monitor and not my video card, because i've tested other monitors and they're all fine.

So... anyone know anything about this, or is my monitor just screwed?

Tried playing with the refresh rate?

Next time, don't buy a no-name brand.

I've never messed with it, if I do something wrong will it totally screw it up, or can I easily just change it back?

You can easily change it back.

But, uh...It's already screwed up anyway, so why does that matter?

It's a really crisp and great monitor otherwise from the zigzag thing...

I've never heard of such a problem at low resolutions.

Tried all the different refresh rates, nothing. I'm probably screwed, heh.

As for the high pitched sound, my sister's monitor used to do that. She simply replaced it.

I don't know very well how moniters work.

But...

The high-pitched sound might be a loose part. This loose part might be used in displaying lower resolutions, and it is somehow damaged enough that when it's in use it can't stay still or something so it vibrates at a high rate.

I dunno.

My old budget 17" monitor whined at high resolutions, but stopped once I lowered it.

Anyway, I doubt the same will happen to my Sony. Even so, you've got to LOVE the three year warranty on these.

Whenever a monitor I'm using starts to make a high pitched sound I just whack it and it stops.
What's this thing do?
That would be sooo cool if it wasn't going to hurt us.

It works with people, too.

I found that my monitor whines. It doesn't really matter what resolution it's at, every once in a while I can hear it whining. I've also seen televisions break into zigzags when the picture got too bright. If you're having problems with zigzags, lower the refresh rate. Chances are your monitor or PC picks what it thinks is the "optimal" refresh rate. This is typically faster at lower resolutions. Perhaps your system raises the refresh rate above what the monitor can handle at lower resolutions.

I already tried all the different refresh rates in the monitor tab, and nothing changed at all...

Is there another way to get it lower by other means that I don't know about? Even though i'm pretty sure it's not the refresh rate... When I smack the monitor, sometimes the waves stop moving, but they're still there. I think Suddar had the best guess in that it's a loose part.

Net really if you buy a used monitor. I got a 15" monitor for about $50. I had it for about one year and I have not problems, yet.

But you must rememeber that Korvus is a monitor whore, and can't live without his precious, $300, 21" baby. And with no job, another $300 monitor every year and a half may force him to sell himself on the street.
