Very intresting to see what happens.
An elephant?

Goto hopes that by using good DNA from an ice-age mammoth he will be able to produce a hybrid of a mammoth and an elephant.By impregnating each female hybrid with mammoth DNA, Goto believes he can produce a mammoth-elephant hybrid in which the original mammoth would predominate in its genetic constitution.

Tada!
... Is anyone else thinking of Jurassic Park? Not with the mammoth, but some guy finding ddinosaur DNA.. and being like... "Gee.."
... O.o

Nope!

Naaa that's only if we find dino DNA in a skeeter trapped in amber! hehehe
And yeah was in the latest PopSci...assuming you can find safely-preserved (ice, tar pits, whatever) genetic material, you could splice yourself up some zoo oddities. Example they gave was saber toothed tigers, but I suppose Mammoths are just as likely.

They went extinct because they were maladapted to the environment. I don't see any great problem in bringing them back.

Check out the big brain on Ja'Deth Issar Ka'bael!
The amusing thing is that you could really clone sheets of any meat once you get started. Cow, horse, duck, human, ostrich, alligator.
Buffalo as well. Supposed to be very healthy, tastes good too from experience. Yes, they do sell ox stuff out in Montana and South Dakota and stuff.
Anyway. Mammoths really aren't fit for current enviroment, so only really a zoo item. Might be useful for evolutionary research if they can string it out long enough to get an almost pure mammoth. [ 02-07-2003: Message edited by: Alaan ]

If they could find a way to just clone tissues without degradation you could grow sheets of meat rather than whole animals.
I remember hearing about that sort of thing actually been done.
Vat-grown boneless fish that was never part of an animal. I believe it's undergoing FDA testing.
