I'm looking into buying a DVD-R drive, but the market for one looks pretty horrible right now.

The only one I can see on newegg with Buffer Underrun Protection is a Sony 2.4X write. Not bad, but not real splendid.

Am I missing a drive with said protection? What's Plextor's holdup?

Yeah, CDs have fallen to around $.25 or $.30 each, but DVDs still have a beter $/MB effectiveness as long as you don't waste any. Of course, they take up a lot less space, too.

You may want to get a sony DU-500A. As far as I am aware, it is the only drive that does DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, CD-R, and CD-RW. It's also very reasonably priced.

Also take note that if you are making home movies (*cough* or are in a band and want to make surround sound songs) that different brands of DVDs work on different dvd players. www.vcdhelp.com will show what dvds work on what players, as well as where to get cheap dvds.

If you are just using it for backup (seeing how dvds are about $1.50 or so now for a good one, it's cheaper than a tape drive), you shouldn't have to worry about that.

edit: I'm not sure about Buffer Underrun Protection with the DU-500A, but I never heard of anyone having problems with it. If they did, it was becuase of a bad dvd, not becuase of the drive.
